Anyone have a good clone recipe for Black Hills Match 175g SMK or FedGMM using Varget?
I'm guess in the 40.0g area.

Much too low. Their site lists the 175 at 2600 fps. That is right around the 42.5 gr. mark in my 26" barrel with Lapua brass. However, 43.0gr. shoots better. Add 0.3-0.5gr. for Winchester or Hornady brass.

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

FGMM lists 2600fps, too. I get 2625fps with 43.5gr Varget and Winchester brass from a Savage varmint barrel.

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

Thanks guys,

I started to dig around on the site and I read a few post that had the 43.5 but they never specified the brass they were using.

Thanks again,

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

I had this load go 2590fps in a Rem 700 Mil Spec 5R - 24" barrel.

44.5 gr Varget
175 gr SMK
CCI BR2 primer
BHA Match Brass (Winchester)
OAL 2.815

Just another reference point... this load has been very consistent at 200 yards... under ideal shooting conditions, most 5 shot groups cluster in the 0.5 to 0.8 MOA range. Rifle is straight out of the box with about 1000 rounds downrange.

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

Im getting 2626fps in a 26" factory barrel.

44gr varget
178 Amax
Fed 210M primer
Fed GMM brass
2.825oal

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

42grn is the starting charge listed on Hodgdon's site with the 175/178 weight bullets.

You can do better in velocity that the factory loads usually so I wouldn't use them as goal but more like a base number.

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

Thanks for the help guys.

Here is what I have found out:
I shot 1 BHM over my Chrony @ 2678fps
with my GAP 22" barrel 11.25"twist

loaded
42.5g Varget, 43.0g, 43.5g

42.5g varget average 2636fps
43.0g varget average 2668fps best group. 0.375"
43.5g varget average 2687fps

Recipe:
43.0g Varget
Fed GMM brass
175g SMK
CCI 200 primers

I know If i changed from the CCI to the Fed 210M that my groups will shrink. I shot some factory stuff the other day and had one hole groups. But over all .375 isn't bad for cheap brass and cheap primers. Long range on a budget.

Until my next batch of Lapua brass comes in later in the week.

Thanks again guys.

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

Don't make that assumption on primers.

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

Yeah but you never know, i'll do some tweaking. Plus the factory Fed GMM has Fed 210M primers in them.

But you're probably right about not making assumptions.

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

My Black Hills .308 175 SMK clone is:
44g varget
CCI 200 large rifle primer
Black Hills Spent Brass
175 SMK's
(I usually get 2615 fps with this load, BH seem to average for me around 2585 fps...so this is just a hair hot...an exact match may be 43.9g....but I want to stay above 2600 to make sure I'm supersonic at 1000')

I shoot a remington 5R 24" barrel

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

I have found great accuracy at 43.0gr and 44.5gr Varget with 210M primers, win brass, and 175 smk

Re: 308 175g BlackHills Clone with Varget?

here is mine...

win brass
fed 210m
45.0gr varget
175gr SMK
seated to 2.800

no signs of pressure.. Hodgdon lists this a as a compressed load...
2500fps from my 18" rem700 pss
