I chrono my loads today through my 20" barrel 1/12 twist.
155 at 2777avg

168 at 2620

175 at 2514

There is very little difference in the barrel lengths. I was surprised at the results. I would of thought I lost at least 75 fps.

Through the 24" the 155s was shooting 2800

168s at 2620

didnot do the 175s/ Thought it would be a waste of time. Since the others shot so similiar.

Re: 308 20" barrel

Both are factory remmington guns barrels and all.

The 168 factory Federals GMs.
the 175 facotry Rmmington ammmo
The 155 are handloads.46.6gr Varget BR2 Lapua brass Lapuas 155

The 20"XCR Remminton factory. The other is factory 24" 308/made in the mid 80s/

Re: 308 20" barrel

I've heard the velocity drop from 24" to 20" in .308 is very minimal, on the order of ~50fps.

Your test confirms that, although you're doing even better!

Re: 308 20" barrel

Long barrels are overrated on tactical 308's... match shooting may need the extra bump, field shooting I have no issue.

Good results thanks for sharing I have an 18.5" barrel and get 2750 with 155's and 2800 if its not hot out,I got 2570 today on 190's I will be testing the 190's more ..

These are hand loads threw a CAN...

Re: 308 20" barrel

Interesting! MM also saw minimal velocity loss when he shortened his barrel. I wonder if the same would hold true for the 7-08 or if the 30 caliber is more forgiving?

Re: 308 20" barrel

In my 260s. The same load in them. One has a 24"barrel shooting 2797 and the other is 26" shooting 2838.The 26" barrel I am shooting 1 tenth of a gr more in it. Not a lot of difference. I wouldnt know about a 7-08. This is the difference in my 260s with a 2" barrel difference.
