A buddy of mine gave me about 20 boxes of German ammo. The boxes are stamped "7.62 ball, lot no. 7, MEN 85" and the rounds are simply head stamped "MEN 85". So I assume it is standard fmj NATO ball. Seems to shoot pretty well out of my T?C .308. Nice looking brass but I assume it it not re-loadable. Anybody know?

Metallwerk Elisenhutte Gmbh, Nassau, Lahn, Germany.

7.62x51 NATO ball. German manufactured, seems to be pretty well regarded in a survey of threads on falfiles and a few other places.

They manufacture both precision and general purpose (read: bulk/machine gun) ammo.

Its hard to know which you have without more info because some of the MG stuff was de-linked and sold on the open market for a while which then ended up at gun shows, etc, as surplus NATO. The surplus/military stuff is still berdan primed today but the precision line is boxer primed.

General Purpose Stuff:

Precision Stuff:

I found a few forum threads where people talked about reloading it and about determining if what they had was reloaded or not but a lot of the older stuff was berdan primed so the responses seemed to depend on when the manufacture date was and which line it came from.

Hope you find the google-fu useful.

Re: .308/7.62 ammo ??

Look down inside the case at the flash hole(s). Do you seen one centered hole, or two small holes that look like a :

one hole = boxer primed and reloadable
two holes = berdan and not reloadable (by conventional, reasonable methods)

Re: .308/7.62 ammo ??

Thanks guys. It's berdan primed so I guess I'll just recycle the brass at my club. Cases are really clean so I don't think it's de-linked ammo
