just got back from Benning, sniper comp. I witnessed something from a short barreled rig that I have not seen before.

We took 2 308's for the sponsor shoot/demo.
One with a 24" tube and one with a 19" tube.
One of the event shooters went to 1140 yards with the 24"r, no big deal.
It was a switchy/gusty day by the time he got to shoot our rigs and my rigs run a bit faster than normal so his dope was a bit off, He was on in 3.
He then asked to shoot the 19"r, I asked "were you going?", he replied, "to 1140", I sat back and watched. He took it to the same 1140, more than one time.
Needless to say I was just as impressed as he was.

The target is just above the right hand scope at the far tree line.

I have really enjoyed the shorty, figured she was good to go out to 800 with regularity, just hadn't pushed the envelope.
I will now start to push out farther with short rigs.

Just wanted to share this with you guys,,,

I have heard of people doing so, I just never spent any time on it myself.
I have always leaned towards longer barrels, even as long as 36".
When I was preping for the trip to Benning I found myself short on rifles due to other demos going on at the same time.
Pulled a barrel off the rack and screwed together a shorty and she ran very well.

I'm going to build more, that's for sure.

LOL, I'm getting to the old and feeble side and it is very attractive to have a rifle that is a bit more friendly for the carrying portion of its life.

Scott,

Been running the 18" 308s out to 1000+ for a while now. In better conditions I will push it beyond that distance and found the accuracy to be top notch. You can see examples of this on You Tube:
<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/sPwXOUxCiGE&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/sPwXOUxCiGE&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/15qj032UJ1I&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/15qj032UJ1I&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I feel in the tactical department going with a long, heavy rifle is counter to everything that is considered tactical. So moving shorter and shorter has produced more and more success.

Recently started doing with the 260, which is now the basis for the new 2009 Sniper's Hide Rifle. For this I wrote:

Short is Smart

Sniper's Hide Build Specs

If you watch, you see I get sub MOA accuracy as that small plate is only 8.75" X 14.75" <span style="font-style: italic">(body is only 11.75")</span> But regardless the speed is there, modern barrels, bullets and powders, and the accuracy is there, so why would you even consider going longer in a tactical rig, simply to squeeze out an additional 100fps, please, then it's an F Class / High Power rifle and not a tactical one. Tactical looking doesn't mean tactically sound.

So, short is smarter, and is being proven so everyday.

Why wouldn't it be accurate? The barrel length is only going to affect velocity. Even if the bullet it did go subsonic (not saying it does), some bullets make the transition to subsonic without any much issue.

Jerry Treo (Mysticplayer on a few other sites) is know for taking his .223 to a mile. His bullets are making the transition to subsonic.

A 208 AMAX lauched at 2500 fps. will retain 100 fps. more velocity (950 fps vs. 850 fps) than Jerry's 80 gr. AMAX at 1700 yards. Guys on here are launching the 208s at 2650 fps. with RL-17 out of 20" barrels (18" should be similar). Someone needs to take an 18" or 20" 308 Win. out to a mile. Should be doable.
