308 Build Question

Got most of my parts together for my 308 build - all I am missing is the bolt (its off being lightened). When everything comes together, there is a small gap between the handguard and the gas block. I've had a small gap before with AR15, but not one this large. Is this normal? Don't really care about appearance, but worried if the gas tube will end up too short and hinder function.

Re: 308 Build Question

It shouldn't be a problem, that's just the length of those JP handguards. As long as your smith put the port in the right spot, and the gas block is correctly lined up over the port, you'll be fine. I just went back and looked at one of my old rifles with this handguard and it has the same gap. Mine ran great.

Re: 308 Build Question

I measured the gas port to shoulder of the barrel and compared it to the gas port to end of the gas block and they were a match. It's a Fulton Armory Barrel, so I hope they know what they are doing

I was really worried that Fulton used a different gas tube length or something.

Re: 308 Build Question

Thats a great looking build, The gap shouldn't be a problem, one of the reasons it's good to cover the gas tube is to protect it from bumps and dents, and keep it from getting knocked loose. Enjoy.

Re: 308 Build Question

SOB....thank you for posting this....made me start looking at the fulton website, was curious if they were doing a AR10 style or DPMS style and wouldn't you know, they do the barrel I have been want to screw around with....a 16" Dissy in 308 with rifle length gas system......

but back to the OP....should be fine. there is wiggle room on the gas tube to be a little shorter inside the upper.

That was my first thought as well. Figured I'd gotten an AR10 barrel by mistake.

I got mine from Brownell's. They carry 3 different 308 Fulton Barrels, including the one you are talking about. This one is for 3-Gun. I'd like to build another upper later - a 16" to run with my suppressor.

Re: 308 Build Question

Took it to the range yesterday. Mostly had time to check function only. Fired 20 rounds through it - Took 6 to get the gas block tuned in. Remaining 12 were fired and the gun worked great. Now, I just need to make a decision on glass...

Re: 308 Build Question

just picked up the Vortex PST FFP 4-16 from Liberty Optics (GREAT FOLKS!!!!!) and for the price very good glass. I am picky and run NF on the Tikka and the AR 15 3 GUn rig but would highly recommend this for a DSM type rifle

Re: 308 Build Question

1-4 is great for 3 GUn! The NF was the only one on the block that I could find a few years ago. My bet is you will be pleased and I would suggest calling Scott @ Liberty liekly the best price and great company

Re: 308 Build Question

Yes, I like the 1-4's. Got a Burris TAC 30 and really like it. I think the MOA reticle they offer would be best for the 308 rather than those designed for 5.56.

To the OP here is a pic of my DPMS with JP handguard and gas block. There is a bit of a gap like yours:

I'll second Branson's recomendation of the Vortex PST line. I have the big brother in 6-24x.
