.308 COL question

I just bought a NIB Rem 700 SPS and after gathering up all the reloading stuff I checked my chamber with a dummy round (fired case and a 168gr Berger VLD). It measured 3.233! That is way longer than sammi 2.800. I realize most guns are a tad longer than spec but that is almost a 1/2 inch! Has anyone run into this before on these guns. I have shot Federal gold medal match 168 and 175 grain loads at 100 yards and gotten several .3 inch groups with said gun. Any suggestions or should I just not worry about it.

Re: .308 COL question

You're comparing apples and potatoes.

The VLD has a much longer ogive which will cause a much longer OAL compared to a SMK when both are seated to touch the rifling.

I wouldn't. </div></div>
I don't like buying premium ammo. I want to "roll my own" if I can.

I feel like I got lucky on this one BUT I did have to put a custom stock on it. The Houge POS went away...Jim

Re: .308 COL question

I would pay the money to get a Hornady Lock and Load Gauge. I know there are other ways of determining the length to your lands but this is an inexpensive and easy way to determine length. But, if you are getting such great results with the Gold Match why don't you just get some Sierra 175 BTHP and try to duplicate the Gold Match.

I have heard MK's don't always open up when impacting flesh. If it wasn't for that I just stay with MK's. I guess I just liked the look of the Bergers and everybody locally uses them. I looked at some 165 HP and BTSP Sierras but the Bergers had better G1 and G7 BC. Guess I got caught up in the numbers and the Pretty orange box ha ha.

Your good to go.
Apart from that minimum requirement, set the length to suit your needs.

Good luck! </div></div> I have heard that before and just forgot.

Re: .308 COL question

there will be plenty of people on here that will tell you the Sierra Match Kings will kill deer; however, I like the bonded bullets such as the Barnes 168 GR TTSX, Hornady 165 InterBond, Nosler 165 Accubonds - all those bullets are good hunting bullets and it doesn't take but a couple of shots to change over from a MK to a hunting bullet - they are not that far off but they are off some.

Re: .308 COL question

TTSX is not a bonded bullet, but point taken.

A-maxes are a good combo target/deer bullet. Better than SMKs all day long.

I use a Sinclair COAL guge. It's a little harder to use than the Hornady, but you don't have to buy a different damn modified case for everything......

Re: .308 COL question

Just bought a box a Sierra 165 HPBT (Part # 2140) Gonna try them. They measure 2.840 with my dummy round way of measuring them. Gonna load some of them this afternoon see what happens tomorrow. The Bergers were loaded with bl-c2 and shot pretty good toady. 1/2 inch at 100 yds today gonna vary the seating depth a little and try again...Jim

I don't want to take a chance.

Re: .308 COL question

With an accurate rifle (provided the shooter does his part) that bullet dosent have to do a whole lot when placed in the neck. If I have a good steady shot, I shoot the neck... 99% DRT. The 1% is they drop but flop a bit, still they don't run off!
BTW, these %s are based off of deer HIT! Good thing is, if you miss, you miss.... no injured deer to run off and suffer!
