.308 federal match brass

Re: .308 federal match brass

I reload fed match brass, the only problem is the primer pockets get loose pretty quick and it is heavy similar to mil brass. I toss them after 4 reloads in my semi autos. Some people avoid fed brass but I use it will keep using it as long as the primer is snug.

Re: .308 federal match brass

4 or 5 reload cycles is about max on Federal brass. It's accurate in a lot of rifles because it's soft and forms to the chamber on the initial firing. That also causes it to "last fast".

If price is no object, Lapua is the way to go.

But I have had very good results with Remington and Winchester also. Especially when you consider price per round of brass.

Good luck.

Re: .308 federal match brass

Never seen an off-center flash hole in FC cases, and I'm up to close to a thousand being used...and now prepped with trimming and deburring flash holes and minimal neck turning.

So, yeah, I've looked at every single one.

Just keep 'em all in the same batch. My older stuff has more case capacity, enough different to make a difference from lightest to heaviest. You probably will not have that problem with current production--it's more consistent IME. And I've weighed a lot of cases the past few months, with and without water... My reloads are now doing a small bit better than FGMM in my rifle.

Re: .308 federal match brass

I have up to 10 loads on several lots of FC cases and honestly see no issues with primers walking so far. I full length resize and load toward the max with most loads.

I was just bestowed 300 once fired FC cases and asked the generous donor why he didn't just save them for when he inevitably begins re-loading. He answered that they aren't worth the trouble for the above reason.

Now I fully plan on loading some up for him as he is generous to a fault, a member here and a damn good guy.

I politely disagree that they aren't worth bothering with.

Re: .308 federal match brass

You're lucky, 44 grains of varget + 168 gave me tons of case expansion and rattling primers with federal. LC goes until I throw it away.

Federal brass makes for great cardio exercise at the case trimmer too.

For the price of that brass at midway (it's 50 cents apiece give or take) Winchester or 1X fired LC are both better choices. That, or bulk lapua for 65? cents each.

Re: .308 federal match brass

I bought a case of 168 GMM a year ago, and now I am using the brass for reloads. I neck size and that's it. I only have 3 firings on the cases thus far, but they seem to be holding up well, with no loose primer pockets. And my accuracy has been outstanding.

Same here. Neck sizing only, annealing every 5th firing, mild loads (42-grs Varget, 178-gr A-Maxes) and they've been fired 10x now, including the factory loading. I've got lots of loose primer pockets but no split necks or signs of case head separation.

Re: .308 federal match brass

I no longer will use Federal rifle brass. If I buy Federal ammo, I'll sell the brass before I use it.

Lapua is No.1, but, I'll use Winchester, or Black Hills as a close second.
