Sorry if I am hitting a topic that is already covered, I searched but came up empty....

I am looking for some frangible factory loaded ammo. Does anyone know a company that offers it? We shoot steel with our frang at work up close with no problems from our pistols....so I figured that a 7.62 at 200-300 yards wouldn't be a problem. Well it looked pretty bad and now we can only shoot steel with frangible only.

Anyone have any ideas? Has to be a factory load through our duty guns. Thanks for the help.

It didn't mess it up? What size steel do you use? Ours is about 3/8 in maybe a little thinnner. Pretty heavy and never had any issues with pistol ammo. We were shooting .308 federal medal match 168gr and it was denting the crap out of it.

I know Powell River Labs in Oak Ridge, TN used to load it. The company has been moved a couple of times. I don't currently know where they are located or how to contact them. Do a Google search.

Re: .308 frangible ammo question

Unless it has a copper jacketed bullet like the Federal Ballisticlean LOTM, I would be very wary of frangable rifle ammo.

The rounds with the sintered copper bullets are very hard. They don't expand into the rifling and skid down the bore causing a LOT of wear.

Some M4s we had at the training range wouldn't keep rounds on the target at 50m. Those that did were lucky to keep it in a six inch group. Some are on their third barrels.

That was CCI / Speer Lawman RHT frangible .223 Rem.

We switched to Federal Ballisticlean LOTM with the copper jacket and the M4s now group about 1.5 inches at 50m with iron sights.

We still use 9mm sintered frangable in the Glocks. It really tears up the barrels. I dropped a bore wear gauge into the barrel and it fell straight through, barely touching the sides!

Gus Rangel from Glock couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the (almost) smoothbore Glocks after about 40 000 rounds of frangable. He said that it was what he might expect after 240 000 rounds of jacketed ammo.

I wouldn't use unjacketed frangable in my own guns even if somebody gave it to me. I would pull the bullets and reload them with a jacketed bullet.

I still use the brass though!

Also, frangable ammo can be expensive. We can get FMJ ammo for less than half the price we a paying for non toxic frangable, but on our indoor range we must use lead free frangable.
