4895 is the "classic" powder, but there's apparently a small/large? minority getting great results with 4064.

Other than 4064 has longer granules (=metering woes), what differences have y'all seen between the powders?

Anyone have data points on velocity changes with temperature changes for either/both?

Thanks!

Re: .308--IMR 4895 vs. IMR 4064?

IMR 4895 is almost as good as Hodgen's 4895. Why? Hodgen 4895 has the same temp insinsitive properties as Varget, burns slightly faster, and meters jsut as good if not better, can be used equally good in 308, 5.56, and most other rifle battle and intermediete calibers in bolt or semi

I'm sick of waiting for **** to arrive from Australia. NO MORE ADI powders for me.

So which IMR is better for what in .308 and why, 4895 or 4064?

I've liked IMR 4064 in every 308 Winchester I've shot it in. I don't remember for sure if I ever tried IMR 4895 though.

You will note that the powder charge is quite low. For some reason, this handgun exhibits high pressure signs even in the low range of recommended published powder charges. In other 308s, I've generally used 41.5 gr. of IMR 4064.

My 5R likes both as long as you get the velocity right. All groups are during load deveolopment at 200m. Here is IMR 4064:

I'll throw in my limited experience. My M1s have liked 4064 over IMR4895. In 308 bolt guns (FN PBR and Savage f10) I use RL15 and been very happy.

Re: .308--IMR 4895 vs. IMR 4064?

I've run A LOT of IMR4895 through my bolt gun .308...

It's been EXTREMELY accurate & reliable. There may be some minor temp issues, but I have not seen any really... so long as you dont let one cook in a hot chamber for a while...lol

I've shot this powder in TX summers with no issues.

48gr IMR4895
Win Brass
210 primer
155 scenar
2.9 OAL

PAY ATTENTION TO THAT OAL PLEASE... THIS IS SAFE IN MY GUN!

Sadly this can be a Ford v. Chevy thing... if your rifle doesn't like 4895 it probably will like 4064... I read that along time ago, seems to be the truth.

Re: .308--IMR 4895 vs. IMR 4064?

+1 to bfoosh on rifle preference. My ugly M1A just refused to shoot IMR4895, it is in love with 4064. 24 pounds later, now it is ready for a new barrel. Who knows what happens to the powder preference once the new tube is in place.

Excellent group with 4064.

44 grains of 4064 is my M1A standard high power load for the 135FB, 168, 175, and 185 VLD. The only change I make is the brass I use for the different slugs, basically different case capacity. The best group I get at 200 is with the Berger 135 grains FB and LC prepped LC brass.
