I have got a trued up 700 long action with a shot out barrel and I am considering building a .308 for 1000 yard shooting. Will the extra room to seat the bullets out farther be any advantage for a few more fps. If one where able to use any bullet for 1000 yard shooting with no magazine length limitations what would be the top picks for bullets.

What bolt face does it have? if its a .308 bolt face then consider the 7/08, that will sure get you out to 1K, and you can seat the 162 A-Max's way the hell out there. But Im still not sure I would build it on a long action.

Re: .308 LA Build

It's a .308 bolt face and I would rather have the 7-08, but there are matches that have 308 only classes and I would like to build something to be able to compete in these classes.

Re: .308 LA Build

If you're planning to shoot anything resembling timed rapid-fire (think High Power), there is at least one potential problem that you'll encounter. With the mag being 1/2" 'too long,' there is enough room for your ammo to creep forward during rapid fire enough to where the bolt won't reliably pick it up.

A good friend built an XTC (across-the-course) HP rifle on a long action Remington, initially in .30-06. He very quickly decided that he would rather have .308, so he had the barrel set back and rechambered. And then the problems began. What used to be an utterly reliable .30-06 became a bolt action jam-o-matic .308. He never had a problem during slow fire segments, only rapid fire.

I suppose you could get around that at least partially by using a shortened follower with a block in the back of the mag. You could tailor the block to whatever length you need. It might work, then again maybe not. Something to consider, anyway.

How does the army run it for their rifles. I thought they were running .308 on long actions with the initial idea that they could be easily swapped for 300 win mags with a new bolt?

I'm thinking in the terms of the .284, most people run a long action to keep from using up powder space. Maybe a few more fps could be gained, especially with heavier bullets. I've already got the action and the stock so I figured what the heck.

I believe a kwik klip will feed them with no problems. The mags for them are around 3.200 and I'm talking about increasing the overall length of the round anyway so there won't be that much room left in the mags. I'm not really worried about rapid fire. I was thinking about building something that I could compete in the F/TR class if I wanted to and just something to experiment with.

Re: .308 LA Build

The factory Rem mag well has a spacer in it to run the 223....should work the same.

If you want into a class that shoots only 308Winchester then build one, I would build it in a S/A and be happy with whatever length you came out to....or add a Wyatts extended mag box, or run a DBM.
