was doing ladder test as per tres recomendation.the charges i got that grouped awsome were 39.5,40 and40.5 grains of varget. im running blackhills brass, and 175 grain smks, federal 210m primers.my question is if i perform the next ladder test and find my load will these be hot enough to work out to 1000 or will i fall subsonic. kinda new to reloading and was skittish about getting much over book max.i have noticed most on here are up around 44 grains of varget. thx in advance

Re: 308 load

Two ways to find out.
One did you chrono them
Two load up a few an use them during your next range outing.
Don't mean to sound like a smart ass, but thats, what I would do.
Shoot them and let us kow

Re: 308 load

The 44 and 45 gr loads are for factory barrels and chambers.

YMMV on custom barrels/chambers - work it up and get a chrono.

Ideally you want to be 2700 fps to get to 1000. 2600 will get you there on non moly bullets.

You don't need a chrony,... good zero at 100 don't touch the knobs shoot to 300 or more,... record the drop, an mother,... check most any good program, or call Sierra.
Programs only get you close, bullets on target remove any doubt or internet B/S.

Re: 308 load

I'm shooting 44gr. Varget out of a 22" R5 11:25 twist Rock Bbl.
It's running 2,720fps. about 34MOA / 10Mrad @ 1000yrds.
Have no problems @ 1000yrds.

Also, try some Reloader 15
I'm getting 2,775fps. out of the same set up with 44gr. Reloder 15 it's about 32MOA / 9.5Mrad

that's with 175gr. SMK

hope that will help.

LOBO,

Try the Hornady Match 178 grain bullets, you can lower your velocity to 2550FPS or so and still match the SMK175 at 2700FPS to 1,000 yards. You will have to dial up maybe 0.6mils or so but they will still fly a bit better in the wind.

HTH!

"do all the bad guys stand at 1000 yards or something, just wondering. "

Best to always take the zombies at 1000 yd.If you let them come in to 600 the mall ninjas will try to get to them first.

Re: 308 load

HEy just orderd 500 of the Hornady 178gr.

Are they really saying that it has a bc of .530? because the bullet must be a mile lone if that is the case
