I never considered buying a .308 but I seem to be collecting bits and peices over the last few weeks that put together might make a good rifle.

I started off by picking up a H-S stock, very cheep that has been hydro painted in snake skin print and never used. The barrel channel was opened up for a 500 T Rex barrel.

Then a mate gave me a new trigger that was excess to his needs.

I have an old Remington 700 long action that is fully trued and is in need of a new barrel.

Then just today I bought a barrel in .308 just decause it was too cheep to refuse. It is a Hart, Heavy .308 stainless barrel. 1.25 parallel x 24". Fluted. Threaded for Rem 700 etc. 1 - 12" twist. Neck Diameter is .338" Davey chamber. Hardly any use.

I am thinking that I have the parts to make possibly a good rifle? What do you think? The bits cost me about $400

Now I have no experience with the .308 cartridge and am wondering if the long Remington action will be OK for this cartridge? Also I intend to use it for target shooting so would be looking for a recomended match projectile for use in 600 and 1000 yard matches. All advice welcome.........Thanks.

I have a M24 Clone built almost to the specs that you have Wadcutter. I have a long action Remmie with a 308 Mike Rock barrel. I have not had any fedding issues with it. It is set-up just like a M-24 but doens't have the U.S. on the receiver. So, go for it.

read your link to the M24,and it state that they had feeding issues with the LA.</div></div> Well spotted but, please don't shoot the messenger.

Re: .308 Mongrel help

It's definitely possible, but if you want to run a detachable magazine system your options are going to be rather limited. HS Precision makes bottom metal for a long action that accepts .308 4 round magazines, but its not very good. Badger also makes a long action bottom metal for .308 (though they don't advertise it) that accepts 5 round AI AE single stack magazines. PM me if you want more details.

All sounds good so far. Just got to put it all together and set up the head space.
What match grade projectile would you recomend?

start out with Sierra Match Kings - 168/175 GR and then start to experiment with Lapua 155GR Scenars and see how it does. I am loading to 2.850 - 2.860 - the 168's are 2.70 to the lands.

That is exactly what I am doing with my clone at the range this weekend.
