I tried posting this in the range reports and exterior ballistics but it didn't do so well so I will try it here. Gun is a remington xcr tactical long range in 308. I shot all the loads round robin and shot a 5 shot group with 168smk's after the ocw test. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated, I have my first match this sunday and would like to shoot the 175's because the 168's aren't very consistent.

Re: 308 OCW Test Help

It looks to me like the scatter group is at 42.7g. If that is the case, the OCW should be 1.5% above that load, ie., 43.3 grains. If you look at your target, the 43.0, 43.3, and 43.6g charge all have very similar POIs. Therefore, your target seems to show the OCW of 43.3 both in regards to the percentage above the scatter group and the consecutive groups with similar POI.

For confirmation, I would load up rounds with 43.1, 43.3 and 43.5g and shoot at the same target. I suspect all 3 will go into a nice group. If so, that confirms 43.3g as your OCW. Then just vary OAL to tighten the group if not to your liking.

Nice shooting and a nice test.

I agree. From those targets, I'd say 43.3 is your sweet spot.

Re: 308 OCW Test Help

44.2 and 44.8 dont show much verticle... test out 44.5 again if you get a chance and if it looks anything like 44.2 and 44.8 I would say thats a decent place to start.

Hows your trigger squeeze?

Re: 308 OCW Test Help

I plan to shoot some more this Saturday, I'll try 44.5 again at 100, and I'll try, 43, 43.3, and 43.6 at the same target. If all goes well I'll play with the oal some and then shoot some at 300 too.

Thanks for the help guys.

Any updates? Were you able to get out and reshoot? </div></div>

No not yet, I have some bullets loaded but haven't shot yet. If all goes well I'll shoot Friday and/or Saturday. Now I'm just trying to get ready before the hickory groundhog shoot. Thanks for checking back up, i'll be sure to keep the post updated.

Re: 308 OCW Test Help

Finally got a chance to shoot this afternoon, wind was blowing quite a bit. I loaded up 3 bullets of 43.1, 43.3, and 43.5 and all 9 shots went into about a 1 1/8'' group at 100 yards. All three of the 43.3 went into one clover leaf hole. I had one shot that went left and one shot high or the group would have been about a 1/2''. I'm gonna try and shoot 300 yards this weekend and see how it goes. Any advice/tips?

Re: 308 OCW Test Help

Tips:
- Use a rear bag
- Straight back trigger pull
- Good luck
- Concentrate 100% and be relaxed at the same time

Try out 44.0 and 44.2 again just for my sake

1 &1/8" is ok, but really a good load shoot give you 1/2" at 100 with little effort.

Re: 308 OCW Test Help

I've been using a rear bag and a harris 6-9 swivel bipod in the front. My 40x trigger is turned down to about 1 1/2 pounds and I try to concentrate and keep my trigger finger at a 90* angle witht the trigger and squeeze straight back. The 1 1/8th inch group was 9 shots with 3 being 43.1, 3 being 43.3 and 3 being 43.5. I figured the group would have been smaller with just one load.

I'll be sure to shoot 43.3 in a 5 shot group alone, and I'll also try 44.0 and 44.2 again.

Thanks Alot!
