never shot 308's,need some advise on twist rates. i'm helping a friend get started, he's looking at a 12 twist rem 700. we have a 1000 yard range to shoot. are 168's or 175's the deal in that twist at long ranges ??

The 168's Amaxs will make it to 1000 if you can push them fast enough, i.e. long enough barrel. The 175's, I have never shot, but the 178's out of an 11.25 twist barrel will make it just fine.
Never tried the 178's out my 12 twist, so I can not comment on that. But it loves the 168's.

+1 for the 1:10 twist. My Rock Creek 22" barrel loves the FGMM 175 SMK

1:12 is fine usually up into the 180s with no problem. 1:11.25 is supposed to be ideal for 175s. 1:10 is only neccesary for projectiles around 190gr or so, or moving slow. All three will work fine in the mid 165-180 range at normal velocities. Twist tends cover a much larger range in .30cal than smaller calibers where a few grains makes a more pronounced difference in projectile length.

A couple fellas at the club are running the 208s from a 1-12 with success. Still, I feel "10" is the magic number with a 308.
My 1-10 308 has never failed to shoot any bullet great. 155s, 168s, 175, 178, 180, 190, 208... If there is extra "spin drift", I've never been able to isolate it from whatever wind I've had to deal with at 1000 yards.

Agree with above - if you are just looking to stabilize up to 175g bullets 12 twist barrel will be fine.
