I know this has been discussed 100's of times but I am looking to find out how a 190 smk does in a 308 to 1000yds. Also what load would you use. I normally load varget for my 308. My 175 smk load is 46.5 with br2's.

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

If you look at the Range Report & Exterior Ballistics section and scroll through the threads, you will find what you're looking for. Basically, R15 is the powder of choice with the heavies in the 308 for accuracy. You can also try R17. The 175 is a great bullet, but when you run the numbers, the 155 or 190+ (208 A-max or 210's) will give the best results for wind. This comment may stir a hornets nest, but oh well. The heavies will have less wind drift from 800+, and the 155's will have less elevation and wind drift inside of 500-600 yards. I throated my 308 barrel to run the 208 A-max.

I've shot the 190s in my 1:10 at shorter range and they are accurate, but you need to get them going pretty fast to be on par with some of the other bullets out to 1k. If you were shooting a 30/06 or 300 WM, sure, you might get that extra velocity you'll need. In a 308 with maybe a shortish barrel, there are better choices out to 1k.

Now, if you can get them for cheap, like I did, by all means fiddle with them, but they do thump a bit more and you probalby would want a 1:10" twist vs. the 1:12s.

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

I've had better luck with Varget than Re15 on my 190's.

I run 43.5 Varget and that puts my 190's around 2625.

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

Ditto what Strickland said.
We shoot with another board memeber who runs them at 2550 fps and does extremely well with them. No need to drive them above 2600-2625fps.

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

strickland do you use br2 primers? 43.5 and seated just like I would with 175's? I don't have notes in front of me but I think 2.80 col

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

Been using the last of my 210M batch. I have 5k of 210's ready to go right behind them when I run out. I'll have to dig my notes laters to what I load them to. Kids need an ass whipping and put to bed first....

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

??

No, I reload all my stuff. I've had about 3k of 210M primers I bought a few years ago. I'm still working through that.

I picked up a case of 210 primers about a year ago that I am getting ready to break into.

Oh, this is all with Rem brass

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

Was with a bud shooting that combo yesterday. 190SMK at 2715fps. Reloader 17 is the magic. No pressure, no problems, seated to factory depth out of a Shilen 10 twisted tube.

It's a frikin freight train. We got back as far as 700 with them 5.3 mils up. According to the wizz bang machine its supersonic to 1300+, 10 mils to 1K.

Not much to dislike about the package.

Cheers,

Doc

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

It was impressive, as were the low ES's.
He was running those 190's faster than the 175 loads we were shooting......bastard!

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

Have had good luck with N550 and 190SMK's. 2700fps is no problem. When they first announced RL17, I said it should be good for heavy bullet loads in the .308, so no surprise that it works well.

With 185g Lapua molly scenars 49g n550, Lapua brass, cci br with my 24in barrel 1 in 11 twist 308 av vl 2,680 fps very accurate load in my stick, have run 50g which brings vl over 2,700 fps.

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

DTubb wrote on a forum once about using 215gr I believe - they were phenomenal out from 800 to 1k....

190 should do quite well, never tried it though.

Re: 308 with 190 smk's

i like the berger vld's 190 gr with 44.5 grains of varget, very accurate load for my ga precision 308 at about2650 fps

That does sound good. 2700 is where most are going to be running 175s.

47.0gr in Hornady Match brass. This brass is light (166gr) with a large case capacity. The rifle is a 1st Gen. FN SPR with a 26" chrome-lined 1-12" twist barrel.
