Range Report .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

I've noticed in the past on here a few people using 20" .308win rifles out to 1000m.

Just wondering what loads at what muzzle velocity people are using?

Also are they keeping the rounds above 1100fps out at that range, or with mordern bullet designs, is keeping the bullet above transonic speed no longer so important?

Regards,

Peter

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

I'm shooting 175's at 2625fps out of my SPS T (20") and at sea level on a standard day that is suposed to give me 1000 yards supersonic. As I understand it thou, the 175's stay very stable through the transonic boundry.

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

flyboy are you handloading the 175's? I would be interested in trying this in my 20". I could only get 2451fps accurately with 165 hpbt. Please let me know.

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

I just chronographed 43.4grs Reloader 15,210M,168gr.AMAX out of my 20"Tikka and got an average of 2560fps. And this is real close to max in my rifle.

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

Yep, I hand load. You will definatly need to work up to this but I'm running 46g of Varget over CCI250's in win brass. I am seating them at 2.820 oal but that my remmy with the bottomless chamber and throat. YMMV.

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

use molys and get a few more FPS.
neckid 155s I can run just over 3k in my 26" savage compressed varget load, don't try this at home kids! YMMV

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

308 in a 26" barrel is not exactly best of breed, chop that to a 20" n well....
Yes it will do 1k, fast 155 work best

But...consider
my 26" 308 went 27moa @ 1K 155scenar

my 20" 6.5x47 also runs 26-27MOA @ 1k

Go short but run a 6 or 6.5

would be my choice if i was building a 20" today

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

The best load I've found for my 20" SPS-T for 1000yds is using 175 SMK or 178 AMAX. I've tried both 168 AMAXs and 155 Palma SMKs/Scenars with just average results. The 168 AMAXs were decent, the 155's not so much.

Here is my favorite 1K load:

175 SMK
45.0 Varget
Lapua
Fed 210
2.815 COAL
MV: 2600 fps @ 3300MSL/70F/30% Humidity

JBM says it's MV is 1230 at 1K. I've gotten excellent accuracy with that load from 100 to 1K. The 178 AMAX with the same load (but at 2.865 COAL) is a close 2nd.

I know every gun is different, but after a lot of load testing various powders and bullet combo's - I've found that my SPS-T's accuracy nodes seem to be right around 2500 and 2600 for 175 SMKs and right around 2650 and 2700 for 168 SMKs & AMAXs.

Enjoy your budget SPS-T. It will perform very well at 1K if you find a good load that shoots well near max velocities and you do your part. Its very satisfying to get consistant hits on steel at 1K next to guys with $3000 custom rifles. I just have to work a lot harder at it. :)

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

i shoot 48.5 grains of vv550 out of my rem.700 mil spec r5 with 155 sierra palma's.will shoot .5 moa all day long at about 2827fps,24"tube at 75 degrees.thinking hard and heavy about an ar 10 and was wondering what this load would do and how velocity i would loose going to an ar 10 and what loads are folks using in them.

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

ive got a 21" barrel 308 using 44gr RL15 with 175smk chrono'd at 2695 fps with no signs of pressure. 3 shot groups at 100 yards are .25moa and accuracy out to 1000 yards continues to be excellent. i cannot verify the velocity at 1k but my ballistics tables are showing me as supersonic out to around 1150 yards or something. but i can consistently hit 18" targets out to 1200 when there's no wind.

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

For the place that I've usually gone to for 1000-yard shooting, my 20" LTR will keep a 165-gr projectile at ~15% over mach 1. Results are so-so as far as actual hits...probably more the shooter than anything else. That location is about 5800' and average temp was 60F, baro 30.06 and humidity below 50%.

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

Anyone try 185g bergers out of their 20"? I currently have a sps-v but i want to cut and crown to 20" but I was curious as to how much velocity I will lose.

Re: .308win Load Performance In 20" Barrel???

Me and a friend of mine are both getting started shooting our 20" .308s with 1:10 twist and seems like the Federal Match 175 SMK seem to be very consistant as far as feet per second and are pushin around 2670ish. Also the Hornady 168 AMax are consistant across the chronograph and both seem to group well too. Were tryin to get setup from 100-1000yds dialing with an NXS 5.5x22

How are you looking as far as overpressure on brass and primers?

First post, and you use it to revive a 14 year old thread... :ROFLMAO:

However, assuming that you are questioning the 175 SMK / 45.0 Varget load at 2.815 - I would say that if he isn't already - he isn't far from starting to show some pressure signs considering he's (was 14 years ago) using Lapua brass. 45.0 is the max load listed by Hodgdon for Varget and the 175gr SMK at 2.800. HOWEVER, Winchester brass (Hodgdon) typically has more case capacity than Lapua (in question) by about 1 - 1.5gr H2O.
