Re: .

Actualy that is a P-14

Or in British vernacular(s)

Rifle no.3 Mk. II (T)
P14MkI*(T) – The American Enfield 14 Rifle Sniper’s Rifle.

The P-14 was used in WWI as the almost exclusive British Sniper rifle.

Cheers,

Re: .

I remember reading that the Brits were looking into replacing the No.1 MkIII rifle with the No.3 (P-14) prior to the outbreak of the Great War in calibre .270. They were impressed by the Mausers used against them during the Boar War and wanted something similar. The pattern 1913 rifle was produced to explore the idea. When the war broke out it was easier to keep producing the No.1 MkIII rather than re-tool. As a result the Brits contracted with some U.S. firms to produce the P-14. There were a great deal of problems with the contracts and "only" about a million were made. Some of the rifles produced during the Great War were issued but mostly to home units, for training purposes and sniping. The Winchester made rifles were thought better suited for this purpose and were fitted with telescopic sights. Between the wars a sniper variant was standardized. I'm not sure how much service these saw, as a sniper version of the No.4 rifle was adopted (No. 4 MkI T). At least that's what I remember reading about it years ago.........

PS - The British version of the rifle was issued with volley sights which are long distance sights used against area targets fixed to the left side of the rifle. These sights were later removed as the pratice of volley fire fell out of practice.
