Varget and I went out this evening to see if we could get some data for 1760 yd. (1 mile). We set out 3 cement blocks on end and 2 high for a total of 6 which makes a target 2 moa high and 1.5 moa wide. We painted a bright orange 12" circle in the middle. We are using 250 gr. SMK running 2950. First shot was dialed 58 moa (iphy) and 4 left wind, ended up hitting with 62 moa (iphy) and 9 of left wind. Got 3 good hits out of 14 shots between the two of us, wind was gusting and caused several near misses, elevation held well. You wouldn't be safe behind a cement block wall at 1 mile we found out.

Re: 338 at 1 mile

Put mortar between them and grout in the cells, then try again...

Whats the retained velocity at that distance?

Kind of hard to say without some information about the environmental conditions. My experience with that round leads me to suspect that it's subsonic, though. Can't have been very warm in Kansas.

Re: 338 at 1 mile

Have you thought about using the 300gr SMK ? It might buck the wind a bit better and would be my choice for shooting the ESL distances you guys are shooting.A mile is one hell of a long shot.Good to hear you are hitting though.I just do a better job on my block walls, full cells and rebar make them a bit harder to penetrate.

Actually a pretty nice day made it up to 60*, at the time of shooting (4.30 pm) it was mid 50"s, elev. is 1120, dew point was in the low 30's. I've had to play with the velocity and bc to get close to observed performance, pushed the velocity up to 3100 and bc @ .611 and it gets close to what we see in the field.
My chrono is a Prochrono Digital and has always been reliable, I ran 10 rounds across it. Our best guess is 1160 fps @ 1760 yd. Scope is a SN-3, 3.2-17X44, range was arrived at with Swaro and Leica. The table below is very close to our observed performance. It didn't copy real well, first row is yds, second is retained velocity and last is come up.

Yes, have them but haven't worked up a load yet, also want to try the Hornaday 250's.
Yes a more substantial wall would prove tougher to penetrate, would also be a lot more trouble to set up on the spare of the moment lets see if we can hit this whim. Farthest I've shot before this was 1100 yds, so a big step. Only had the rifle about a month so still a steep learning curve.

Re: 338 at 1 mile

Bronco,
good idea with the cinder blocks, a good reactive target for long distance. I will try the same. We haven't reached out to a mile yet, but as soon as my mount for my AI arrives we are going to head out to the desert.

Re: 338 at 1 mile

Well, for having no field data at this range, and then just doing it on a whim and getting on in 7 shots in a 10mph wind, it was still lots of fun and very exciting!

Re: 338 at 1 mile

Where you boys shoot'in at??? We may have to get together some day, I have a 2000yd range already set up (steel targets) near Wilson. In between Salina and Hays right off I-70.

In all fairness to supershot, it only says .338 at 1 mile.

Which .338?

I'm assuming the Lapua, but it could be the Edge too.

Re: 338 at 1 mile

338 Lapua. Sorry should have spelled it out. We did this on a lark because it was such a nice day. We had planed at some point to stretch this rifle out. I figured it would take the 300 smk to get there, guess not.

Bronco,
I am a fan of the 250 Hornady BTHP Match pill. Good on game but they vary a bit in weight. One batch varied by about 3 grains in weight. Be interested to see how they go at ELR.

When I first got the T'wolf, I bought a box of Hornady loaded ammo with the 250gr bullet to use as a chrono baseline and found that it was quite accurate but I only got to 400 when I ran out but I did get the chrono numbers. (Not at home for a week or so, so numbers not available at this time).

Re: 338 at 1 mile

And he's shooting from the "wrong" side.
He can chew all he wants, but I've seen the results and he does just fine!

I'm jealous! I imagine those draws are good cover for some big deer!
