OK, so this week I went into my gun dealer looking for a .300WinMag and came across a find. They had a brand new Weatherby Mark V .338 Magnum, with the Accubrake already installed for $1,450. And a new Remington 700 Police series .338 Lapua Magnum for $1,250.

The Weatherby felt amazing... very smooth action, comfortable weight/length ratio. The Remington felt blockier and the action was sloppy. I'm leaning towards the Weatherby, but to be honest I'm not familiar with Weatherby rifles at all. And I certainly am not familiar with the .338 Weatherby Magnum.

What are the main differences between the WeatherbyMag and the LapMag? I assume the ballistics are negligible, but looking up ammo the availability on the Weatherby is pretty scarce. Still, I have never seen a .338 Mag this cheap. So, I might be willing to spring for the expensive ammo for this rifle if it's worth it. Anybody have any info on these two rifles? Or know where I can get either ammo cheap/reloaded? I eventually will get the setup to reload but not for several months.

Thanks

Re: 338 LapMag vs .338 Weatherby Mag

ammo on both is going to be at least $4/round if you have to buy factory.

the 338 lapua is a much better case design and i have heard of some of the rem mlr's shooting very well.

you need to deciede what your need for the rifle is before you get many responses.

Mainly long range use, 800-1200 yards an occasional big game hunts. The bottom line is that I originally intended on buying a .300WinMag, but have always liked/wanted the .338. When I came across these so inexpensive I started to consider them more seriously. However, I truly hate the fact that the rounds for the .338 cost so much. I'll have to use factory ammo for a few months until I can pick up some reloading gear this summer.
