I've searched around here and the rest of the web, found a few loads but nothing that's giving me tons of confidence. Figured the 1k section would be a little better for Lapua advice then the standard reloading area.

So, anyone out there using the 285 Hornady (or something close) and 4831SC? Lapua brass of course, will be loaded .010 off the lands to start in a 338 AX.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

not exactly what your looking for, but im shooting 210g Berger VLDs with 71.5g of H4831sc with outstanding results out to 1300yds with my 300wm. MV 2805 with an ES of 5. Shooting jammed. The 4831sc has been the best powder ive used with my winmag.

300smk over 91.0 of retumbo works great for me out of my 110ba

Usually H1000 gives the best performance from the 338 lapua.
It seems to be the go to powder for the big 338s

This is from the Hodgdon manual.

250's 85 grs.
300's 79 grs.
Split the difference to start
Once you find your charge weight try different primers. Several of us have found using magnum primers allows us to manage the pressure spike in a more consistant way. Less vertical.

It is on the fast side but will do the job, the load data seems sketchy to say the least. Just on fast powders and .338LM I've seen some pretty impressive test results with RE17 with both 250's and 300's and actually loaded some 300's to try (test loads were too hot and had to pull them unfortunately).

Jason, If you do work up some loads please share the results. I've got a box of 285's waiting for me to collect - I was going to try N570 and H1000 but also have some 4831 on hand too... Tomorrow I'll be trying 250 lock base and N165.

Cheers

I haven't tried the 285's but I use the 300 Bergers and the 300SMK with 101 Grains of Ramshot Magnum in a 338AX. Just under 3000FPS out of a 26inch barrel. I will try to get some 285's to test.

I'm using 90.0 grains of 4831sc with a 250gr. Scenar. It's a max load according to Sierra but gives outstanding performance out of my TRG.

I see the Hodgdon website has a load for a 275 grain bullet and 4831 (not sc though):

COL 3.46"

Start - 71gr. 2349 fps 42,800 cup
Max - 79gr. 2572 fps 52,800 cup

Not sure it helps, but I've been looking at the same issue as I have quite a bit of 4831sc left and want to move to the 285's.

I am using Laupua Scenar 250 gr bullet, 89.1 gr of H4831SC,Federal 215M primer, Laupa brass and getting 2940 fps at 5000 ft altitude. The SD is 8 and the ES is 29. This is in an AI AWSM .338. Very accurate load, I could run it hotter but am happy with that performance. Hope this helps.

Re: 338 Lapua loads with 4831SC and 285 Hornady's

Greetings,
I'm using 300 gr SMK with 89.0 gr 4831 (not sc). The load would be too hot except I impacted a lubricant on the bullets(HBN). That part is critical! Rather than add extra powder when a bullet lube is used, I use a faster powder. I'm getting 2800 fps in a 26" Savage. I'm not finished developing the load but it will end up somewhere near 89. The COL is not near the lands as they must fit in a magazine. I think to get near the lands is to increase pressure.

I use 88gr 4831SC and 88.4gr N560 with my 250gr SMK's and Berger 250gr Hybrids both powders shoot really well @ 2900 fps, from my 26" 1:9 110BA. for my 300's I use H1000 and N570.

Any particular reason you're using 4831 J? I've loaded for many 338LM's over the years and have always used H1000, and more recently only Retumbo.

Just guessing here, but I don't believe you'll get quite a full case with 4831, and will certainly not get quite as much velocity as a slower powder. Even with my current Retumbo load in my AX 338 of 92.0gr (with a 300gr SMK) the load is only *slightly* compressed.

I know you're a very experienced hand loader so I'd like to hear why the selection of H4831sc. Maybe I need to learn something
