Just started putting together my Sako TRG 42, and getting ready to fire the first round down the tube. I have bought 40 rounds of Black Hills 250gr. The barrel is a 1:12 twist, so that's why I'm going wih the 250gr.

Now for the question: what is the differance between Lock-Base, and Scenar?

I have never reloaded for the .338 Lapua Mag. I do reload .223, .270wsm, .308, 30-06, and pistol ammo. I would just like to get any info. Thanx....

Re: .338 Lapua Mag

Lock-Base= 250 FMJ bullet with some lead exposed on it´s base. Military issue loads use this bullet. Leaves the rifle a trifle faster than 250 Scenar but has a little worse BC. Considering speed, BC and trajectory it is on par with 250 Scenars.

Scenar=HPBT with open tip albeit the opening is very smlall similar to Sierra Match Kings. It is available both in 250 and 300 grein versions. 300 grein versions work out of 338LM at least out too 600m easy.

Scenar is TYPICALLY more accurate but not always.

Out of 12" twist one does not gain anything in using 300 greiners. 250 greiners fly nicely out to 2000 meters even though they go subsonic around 1400 meters. -> Stick to 250 Scenars and you will not be sorry and can concetrate ona actual shooting instead of burning the throat with various test loads.
