trying to find a scope for a 338 lapua project. my biggest concern is am i going to have enough elevation in the scope. most of the scopes in my price range (i know i know, just spend the money, i don't yet have 3k to drop on a S&B or Steiner, ild like to keep it closer to $1500 until i can upgrade and put the scope on another gun) are right around 100-70 moa total. so to all of those that have a 338 and have shot at least past 1000 yards what was your dope? I've looked at some free online ballistics calculators but i know that doesn't always translate too well in the real world. thanks guys!

I have ran a 5-20x50 Vortex Razor with a 20 moa base on my 338 LM with around 2600 rounds now. 17.6 Mils is what is needed here.

Cheers

Most scopes have plenty of elevation for a mile. You will need at least a 20 MOA base if you are using some of the scopes with less elevation. 17.5 mils gets me to a mile at sea level. 300 OTM AT 2740 FPS.

I had similar dope to jfields. I was ~ 17.3 mils with the same bullet combo.

I had a 30 MOA base on my action. I still had plenty of elevation plus the reticle left.

I was in a similar situation where I couldn't put much money into a scope for my 338LM, so I bought a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50ffp with MOA reticle. I use a 20 MOA rail and I can get to 1500 yards by maxing out the elevation. To shoot a mile, I have to go to the reticle which has another 20moa. The absolute bottom of my reticle gets me to 1800. This is with 300gr Scenar.

I dial 58.25-60 moa @1689yds, running a 300gr. Smk @ 2732fps thru a dta srs with nightforce 22x56 in a dta +40moa mount. In this mount there is a total of 96moa of comeup from 0.

I dial 56 MOA with McMillan Tac .338/NF 6-22x56 scope/20 MOA base @1830 yards
Lapua brass, 90.5 grains of H1000, 300 grain Berger VLD's

I am using 64-66 MOA (depending on DA) to get to a mile with 300 SMK's being pushed by 91.0 grains of Retumbo. Rifle is a TRG-42 with a NF 5.5-22 on a Near 45 MOA base.

I have a 284 shooting 162AMAXs and a 4.5x14 Leupold MK4 with a 20MOA base and I am on with 65 to 66MOA. A friend who was also shooting at the target had a 338 Lapua shooting 300gr Bergers and our data was nearly the same from 1500 on out. Not sure what is load was.

I'm running a leupold mark 4 5-25 ffp does just fine. 20 moa base. 1 mile is my limit with that base. I'd recommend a 30 maybe more. Here's what I'm getting for dope.

Good luck.

I'm running a 40moa cant with a Bushnell XRS 4.5-30x50 and can zero at 100yds and can dial out to 2400yds (37mils) with my 338LM 250gr Berger Tactical Hybrids with 96.5g Retumbo at 2950fps..
