I have been loading 97 gr of h1000 shooting 300gr sierra in lapua brass. My velocity is around 2950fps. Accuracy is ok but I have slight ejector marks. should i back down the load? Is anyone else using h1000 in thier 338 lapua

Re: 338 lapua velocity

Back it down....2950 with a 300 is really fast...how long is your barrel?

Re: 338 lapua velocity

I tried it(H1000), loading up to 93grs. with the 300SMK. Was seeing ejecter marks and stiff bolt lift...velocity was right at 2700fps. Switched to Retumbo and got 2800+ with less pressure.

How did it shoot on the way up to 97grs?

Re: 338 lapua velocity

On the Hodgdon website, it lists 92 grains under a 300 gr SMk as a compressed load. You're putting 97 grains in there? Let's just assume that the 92 grains that Hodgdon recommends creates a pressure of 63,500 psi. Just an assumption. If you're loading 97 grains, you're then likely up to the 70,000 psi mark. That's why you're getting extractor marks. If it were me, I'd not seek to re-arrange my face for the sake of fun.

Re: 338 lapua velocity

accuracy at 200yards is about 3/4". It didn't seem like a compressed load to me as I had alot of space left. The bolt lift was still easy, no pressure signs on the primer and the ejector mark was not visible at 96gr. I think I will back down to 95gr and check accuracy at 300yards. With95gr of h1000 I was right around 2800fps.

Re: 338 lapua velocity

Good idea...what I've found with the two .338LMs I've worked with is try to test loads out as far as possible...100 and 200 doesnt really tell you much other than making sure your getting the velocity you need or want. I like to test at 500 meters.

Re: 338 lapua velocity

Well 28" is only one part of the equation. What is the twist...a 9,12,? 300's wont stabilize w/ a 1:12. i use V V N560 at around 86.5 gr (ill have to double check) for about 2950 MV w/ a 250 gr Lapua lockbase, basically what the SAKO TRG was designed around for the Finns. it shoots real nice

Re: 338 lapua velocity

Im actually thinking about trying H4831SC just for the fact the VihtVouri N560 is a little harder to come by.... I would try the V V 150 or 160 heard good things

Re: 338 lapua velocity

I use RL-19 86grains under a 300grain matchking shoots great.havent chronoed...dont have speed info.

damn. How fast do you push that sucker? Do you get any signs of high pressure? At 94.5 grains of RL25, I am pushing my 250 grains at 3000 fps.
