1/2" thick A36 mild steel @ 100 yards vs 300gr Scenar .338 Lapua Mag. The plate didn't stand a chance.

FUN! But I need to pick up some AR500 steel plates now.

Re: 338 Lapua vs 1/2" Steel

Funny you should ask. We shot the plate with a 308 at the same range. It left a crater on the surface and a small bump on the back. I think 3 or 4 hits in the same spot with a 308 would penetrate it.

Time for some AR500.

Re: 338 Lapua vs 1/2" Steel

You should get FMJ and see how much metal it would go through. Zombie's dont stand a chance

Re: 338 Lapua vs 1/2" Steel

Here is a 1/2" AR 500 on the left and 1/2" A36 mild steel on the right shot with my 250 MK 338LM load at 400 yards. I dont have any pics of what my 50BMG does but I can tell you this much, it leaves huge holes and the targets better be held in place really good

Have you ever shed a jacket and had it come back to land by you my shooting into the soft steel?

Re: 338 Lapua vs 1/2" Steel

Nice, only downsides that AR500 is expensive!

Re: 338 Lapua vs 1/2" Steel

Most supersonic ammo rips through mild steel at 100 yards.

I've had 3/8 inch plates that 5.56 just bores little holes through.

This is a steel swinger I had hung out at 850 yards. The bullet marks that left marks in the paint were a .300 WM. no dings in the steel, just paint marks.

Then I shot it with a .50 BMG 750 grain AMAX from the same distance.

It ripped it off the coat hangers holding it up and threw it back about 6 feet. Orange and green sparks flew about 10 feet in all directions.

Re: 338 Lapua vs 1/2" Steel

We have some overrun 1/2" premium AR500 if your interested. PM me and I'll let you know what we have and the price.

We shot one of our little 25% IPSC targets in 1/2" with both AP .223 rounds and 50BMG rounds at 50 yards. It only left little dimples from the armor piercing rounds and just a huge splatter mark from the 50bmg. The 50 cal was shooting 750 grain AMAX bullets at 2700+ FPS!!!

Re: 338 Lapua vs 1/2" Steel

Here is a couple pictures and videos of us shooting one of our 25% IPSC 1/2" targets.

Targets were shot 2 times with 5.56 Armor piecing rounds and one time with a 50 CAL BMG. Shooting a 750 grain AMAX. Right about 2725 FPS. The plate behind it was mild steel just holding the 25% IPSC up. It was dented pretty good from the force of the bullet. But the 25% held up great!!!!!

Re: 338 Lapua vs 1/2" Steel

you'll get a lot better life from AR500 if you let it swing when hit, and also hang it so that it's at a slight angle facing to the ground, so that the splatter goes downwards into the dirt. If you hang it rigid, all the energy goes into denting or dimpling the AR500.

Re: 338 Lapua vs 1/2" Steel

I love these screen shots from that other youtube vid on the .50 BMG AMAX round hitting that AR500 plate.

Then BLAM!!!

after-vi.jpg

It knocked the stand over and ripped the plate right off the chains holding it.

That big AMAX round has some serious kinetic energy.
