Myself and a friend of mine are both getting ready to add 338LM to the calibers we reload. We both have several reloading manuals but none of them have much info on the Lapua mag. I am getting ready to order a manual or two and am wondering which ones are best. I would like to find something with data for lots of powders, but specifically Hodgdon, as that is what I use most.

Re: 338 LM loading reference

Get Sierra and Hodgdon manuals, you might also consider the Quickload computer program tons of data.

Reloader25 and Retumbo are the best for the .338 LM,

I will look into Quickload. Never considered that. Do any of our Hide supporters sell it? Best place to buy?

As for the 215M's, I have 1K. I will try and find some more before I use those up. I also have 1K of the CCI Magnum LR primers, are those to be avoided in 338LM?

If anyone needs some 205M's, I would trade some for 215M's.

Re: 338 LM loading reference

I will not use the CCI's without a lot more research then. Guess I will stick to my 215M's. hopefully I can find some more before I use the 1K I have.

Also will look into QL.

This is the Hodgdon manual online that is searchable through an ASP pull down database.

If you take the data here and copy it into a txt file and then import it into excel it will come in nicely.

You can also go to their website and just print out the loads.

Yes federal 215 or 215M only, I have tried CCI and remington had hangfires and a dud. </div></div>

Just relaying my experience with CCI large rifle magnum primers. I've used close to 700 of them in reloading the 338LM and never had (knock on wood) a hangfire or dud.

Re: 338 LM loading reference

I am glad to hear you had good results with the LR mag primers from CCI, because I have a thousand of them. Hopefully others will chime in with similar results.

Re: 338 LM loading reference

Glad you have not had any duds. One was enough for me. The thrill is finally having to open that bolt not knowing if it is a long hang fire or a dud.

I do use CCI in all my other loads and have never had a problem, but the volume of powder seems to be too much for the CCI-250 primer. Why take the chance.

Re: 338 LM loading reference

Try the CCI M34s if you can find them, Black Hills uses them in their 338 Lapua factory ammo.

I've not had a single hangfire or misfire using them and I'm achieving the same groups, spread and accuracy as the 215Ms and WLRM primers.

Re: 338 LM loading reference

CCI Mags -- Used them quite a bit with cases igniting over 100 grains of powder. Never had a problem, not one, and we were looking at pressure/time curves. I'd suspect that #34's don't contain as much priming mix, ergo - not as much case pressurization as with true magnum primers. In general, I'd stay with mag primers. Winchester/CCI or FED. Remington has a one of the best mag primers, but that specific part number is not for sale to reloaders.

Re: 338 LM loading reference

I have not used standard LR primers yet. I'm a little leary of the fact that a regular LR has to ignite over 100grs of powder. Also, I'm not sure if SD and ES would be acceptable on standard LR primers.

Does anyone have hands on experience with reg LR primers in the 338 LM? If you do, I'd love to hear about how they worked. If no one has done this, then I'll give it a try in the near future.

I was told by a CCI rep. that the #34 primers are the mil-spec equivalent to the CCI 250s but have a harder cup intended to prevent slamfires in semi-automatics. I see no reason not to consider them a true magnum primer. They have performed flawlessly for me in my 338, they're just hard to find.
