I'm in the process of rebarreling a 300win mag and just read about the 338 Norma mag being able to chamber in a long action. Does anyone have any experience with this cartridge? It sounded interesting as far as bullet seating and muzzle velocity of 2,725 fps .

Why not do a 338 EDGE or Lapua? You'll get muzzle velocity over 3000fps. If your buying a barrel it'll cost the same either way you go just check the bolt face. Any reason for wanting the Norma rather than one of these?

Besides the bolt facing I read there is no other modifications needed. From what info I found the Norma only loses 75fps to the Lapua when loaded with 300 grain smk and it does it with a 26" barrel. I'll probably stick with the 300 win mag because there doesn't seem to be much info about it. If Norma wanted to promote it they should push a little more info.

I own two 338 Normas and can't say enough good things about both.
They both shoot lights out.......easily outshooting my friends McMillan 338 Lapua.
Another advantage to the Norma is the barrel life-about 4k I should think.
There is a lot of good info here on the 338 Norma to contemplate.

So is it true that with a OAL of 3.6 it will fit in any long action ? What about pressure signs is hate to build one only to have the bolt lock up. Also what mags do you use? Mine is going to wearing a XLR chassis and didn't want to run into feeding problems either.

Ok, one rifle was built on a Remington long action, and the other on a Surgeon XL. The rem. has a 27" rock barrel, runs about 2770fps with a 300gn Sierra, that's with a load that's well below max load: with no signs of overpressure.
The surgeon has a 29" barrel and runs around 2980 with the same load. I use AI mags and haven't had any feeding problems to date......
