Here are some ballistics I got from "shootingtimes.com"

.338 Win Mag
Bullet Weight 250
Muzzle velocity 2800
Velocity at 500 yards 1920
Muzzle Energy 4350
Energy at 500 yards 2035

Trajectory at 100 yards +1.8
Trajectory at 500 yards -44.9

.338 Lapua Magnum
Bullet Weight 250
Muzzle velocity 2690
Velocity at 500 yards 1822
Muzzle Energy 4420
Energy at 500 yards 2028

Trajectory at 100 yards +2.0
Trajectory at 500 yards -49.5

For the same bullet weight The win mag has a slightly straighter trajectory compared to the lapua and carries as much energy as the lapua at 500 yards

Let me know why I should chose the Lapua bullet over the win mag

Re: .338 Win Mag v.s. .338 Lapua Magnum

Because your numbers are way off. I dont have a Lapua, but I think about 3000 with the 250 is more like it.

Re: .338 Win Mag v.s. .338 Lapua Magnum

Don't know what kinda load they were running outta the Lapua but that WAY out of line. I've heard more in the 3000fps range for 250's. And I could be wrong but 2800 out of the Win Mag seems a bit ambitious.

Re: .338 Win Mag v.s. .338 Lapua Magnum

I think the numbers from shootingtimes are a little off.
Check a few other sources and I think you will see that the Lapua
wins easy.

I am afraid that your source for the 338LM is way off. My AIAWSM can push the 250 grains at 3000fps. Even with the 300 SMK, it pushes around 2770 fps. Also, unless your 338 Win mag is on super steroid, I think the 2800 fps is a bit fast.

Re: .338 Win Mag v.s. .338 Lapua Magnum

According to Wikipedia:

.338 win mag w/ 24'' barrel
250g - 2,655 ft/s

.338 Lapua w/ 26'' barrel
250g - 3,000 ft/s

Quite a big difference.

Re: .338 Win Mag v.s. .338 Lapua Magnum

accuratepowder.com charts

shot the .338 win mag at max velocity 2655

shot the .338 lapua mag at max velocity 2961

at all grain (200, 250), accuratepowder.com shows the Lapua with a ~300 ft/s advantage

what would the real drop rate difference be ?

Re: .338 Win Mag v.s. .338 Lapua Magnum

My 250 Scenars are leaving my Lapua at about 3050 and good luck getting a 250 to 2800 from a 338 Win Mag without creating yourself some issues.

I don't know where Shooting Times got their numbers from but that is in no way an accurate comparison.

Re: .338 Win Mag v.s. .338 Lapua Magnum

The .338 Win could be a pretty decent performer with that Hornady 250gr BTHP, but it does lack for velocity....

What really will give the .338 lapua a run for its money is the .340 Weatherby. Within 100-150 fps and if done up in a custom chamber without all that wby free-bore crap, a tremendously capable ctg.

What really works best to deliver top velocities from a standard case is the .338-300win. The .338-300 rivals the .340 and the .338 ultra mag with much less powder, cheaper brass and more room to seat long bullets in a 1:10 twist barrel, also the .532 case diameter gives more room in magazine, usually enabling another round or two to be loaded in mag of same dimension as house the lapua mag or ultra mag ctgs.

Re: .338 Win Mag v.s. .338 Lapua Magnum

Another one that would give it a run for its money is the 338-378. That cartridge has been around quite a while for a good reason.
