Wagoner,Ok.
Has anyone had any experience with the 338 win. mag. at long range 1000+ yds. I am thinking 250gr. match bullet at 2650 fps should do everything a 300 wim. mag can do maybe a little better. Or am I just wishing.
Thanks Mike

Re: 338 Win Mag

IMHO, if you want the 338 caliber, then go with the 338 LM. It will get you out there and then some. If you compromise yourself with the 338 WM, then you will see that the ballistic is not so superior when you try to reach 1500 yards. For certain, it will cost much more than the 300 win mag to shoot. If you look at the BC of the 250 grains bullets be it Lapua scenars, or SMK, it's going to be around .6 ish. Now take the 208 AMAX, or the 210 Berger VLD, you see that the BC is comparable. Well, the decision is yours...

Re: 338 Win Mag

The .338 250 grain SMK bullet has a BC of .587. A 208 A-max with a BC of .648 in a 300WM will out perform a 338 WM. The 338WM speed is much lower than the 300WM with less BC. So, for long range, the nod goes the the 300WM. But, for hunting sakes, I love the 338 WM. I have thought about one for an elk round. But then, there's the 300W!
