I am planning to get a .338LM this year with my tax refund. I am considering getting going with a custom build but also have had my eye on a McMillan TAC-338 for a few months. This will be my first rifle bigger than .308. I keep reading about GAP and how good they are. I am going to try to give them a call and see what they can tell me. Are there any other custom builders that are recommended? I want a McMillan A5 stock with adjustable cheek piece. I like the idea of a McCann Industries SIRS mount whether I will ever use it or not. Outside of that and the optics I plan on getting I am not sure what to look for accessories or option wise. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I have access to a private range that is 600 yards right now. They are working on stretching it out to 1000 yards with an elevated shooting platform.

Re: .338LM Rifle

I kinda figured going the custom route would be what most recommended. I should have between 4K and 5K to spend on the rifle. I know I want a detachable box magazine and non-fluted barrel. Much past that and the stock I am open to suggestions.

Re: .338LM Rifle

I am looking at possible having GAP build the rifle for me. One of the things I am considering is having it built on Surgeon XL repeater action vs the GAP Templar action. Looking at the specs the Surgeon is a lot heavier though. Is there any advantage to the surgeon action of the GAP action? I see that the Surgeon action has an integrated 30 MOA rail. Is there any advantage to a fluted bolt? The GAP has a one piece bolt. Just looking for some opinions and answers from people with more time and experience than I have.
