Last year I had a Weatherby Vanguard in 300wm that was ready for rebarrel. I wanted to go 338 edge but Action is a bit short and I wanted a repeater. Friend had a 338/375 ruger reamer I could use. So I ordered a Pre-Fit barrel nut barrel (howage) from McGowen in 338RCM 1:9 30” straight.

We all know hornady is currently the only company making 375 ruger brass and their brass isn’t the greatest.
My friend was using 8x68S brass from Norma and RWS. Trimming it down to 2.6 and fire forming. I wanted to do the same but didn’t want to trim first and then fire form and trim again. So I ran the reamer in an extra .025”, I gained about 4% capacity.

Now I take the 8x68s brass, neck up to 375, then neck down to 338 forming a false shoulder. I’m using rcbs 375 ruger fl die, 338 rcm seater and fl die adjusted appropriately.

So now I have 338 with good brass and 98.9gr H2o capacity shooting 250gr Berger at 3025fps with h1000. It shoots .2-.4 moa out to 735 yards and holds moa at 1800.

I rather enjoy the fire forming process. I used bullets as I hate cow and had a bunch of cheap bullets I wasn’t going to use. Plus I get to shoot while doing it and accuracy was very good. I had a bunch of re22 I wouldn’t use for temp stability issues so I shot 225gr sst’s Over 66 gr of re22 and a cci250. They shot around 2660 and accuracy was about 3/4 moa and it broke in my barrel well and gave a pretty good fire form the first shooting.

Dave Manson and I partnered up 20+ years and developed a line based on the 8X68 case. 270, 7MM, 30 & 338 Dave was still running Clymer at the time. I built a switch barrel rifle. A 7MM and a 338. Loved the 338 version. Kind of an over achiever. I got hold of 500 Swift, off weight, 217 Gr. bullets that shoot .5" all day long. I added a 300 PRC barrel to that rifle for a trip to SA last year. Shameless plug. I still have two extra sets of Redding dies if someone would want to try that round. Probably a couple hundred rounds of brass stashed somewhere.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for “tinkering” so please dont take this the wrong way.

What is the advantage of this over 338 Lapua? You can fit a 338 Lapua in a long action and get higher case capacity.

I could not fit a 338 lm in this action. I wanted a build that required no gunsmithing that I could do at home.
Plus I just wanted something different. And wanted to be able to run it as a repeater if I wanted using the action I had. Plus the reamer use was free

Wonder what this would do with a 270-285 class projectile?

When is Hornady going to make the 338prc a commercial round? They've been making a bunch of other cartridges commercial.
Have you asked them?

I’ve messaged them a few times already but will message them again. They seem responsive to their consumers.

@375fan Not sure if you care that its actually commercially available but you could do a 338 Sherman Mag. He should have dies and reamer ready to ship

I was mostly poking a little fun at Hornady since all the new cartridges they've been bringing out.
I actually had a 338RUM at one time, but I shot it out.
Now, I've got an action and barrel at the smith's for a 338LM. Easy to get everything (components, etc.) vs other rounds.

I can’t think of a chambering that I’ve seen asked for more.
Come on already @hornady.
