340 weatherby

Re: 340 weatherby

I used MarkV 340Wby in Alaska since mid 70s but not the Alaskan. As for as the 340 goes, a real hell bender at both ends. I used 250gr Nolser Part to 2900+, load data is still in Alaska, fairly hot load. My rifle was moa with 250gr, prob could be better with time and effort from me. The action is on the heavy side but rifle was not overly heavy especially for the caliber and action. I use to be able to handle the recoil but 2 summers ago getting ready for a trip, it hurt, thought I lost a filling. I wanted the 338.378 but at the time in the 70s it was a wildcat. If I was choosing today, I would go with the 338.378 but hunting the last decade or so with non mag calibers and seeing moose tipped over with 7mm.08 and 308, and I can handle the recoil. The 26" barrel was never an issue on hand and knees in alders or hunting by boat.

As far as the Alaskan, cant say. The Accumark very popular and did well in the weather but they are heavier than my MarkV. But, my MarkV never did have an issue with weather even boat hunting. A lot a guys I know hate shiny barrels for hunting.

Not much help...good luck.
