Why hasn't/doesn't somebody neck down a 416Barrett to 375? I would think this would make a great long range setup without completely killing barrel life like a 375-50BMG most likely would.

So why no 375-416Barrett's for ELR use????????

Re: 375-416Barrett

It has been done before. At that point, you are teetering on crazy overbore, and your powder selection gets hard.

I would have to agree and thats why Dave and his big 375 are having trouble with powders as well

Re: 375-416Barrett

Yes, so it would technically be a .375/.50. There are plenty of .50BMG-based wildcats, but generally it gets problematic when you neck down too much. That's why the .375CT performs so well - it's a near perfect balance of bullet dimensions/mass and case capacity.

Rumor has it that when the .408CT was being developed about 12 years ago, they determined a .375 bullet would be the best performer, but decided on a .408 diameter because bullets were extremely rare and they could charge more for the whole package.

Re: 375-416Barrett

The 416Barrett is a short bodied 50bmg not just a necked down .50

Re: 375-416Barrett

There is about an inch and a little more taken off, to account for unusable case capacity.

Re: 375-416Barrett

Yip they shortened the 50 when making the 416 as the full length version would have been to over bore

Re: 375-416Barrett

Its the same when you neck the 416 down to 375 its very over bore burning 200grs and limits any powder there is aout there
Daves 375VM burns about 160grs and is also limited with the powders there is on offer and you would need a very long barrel to burn all the slow burning powder.

Re: 375-416Barrett

The 416 case is the perfect size for bore size. What`s needed is a bullet with a BC above 1.0.
