a buddy of mine has this crazy idea of loading a 45-70 gov, with a .410 powder and shot charge.... so he can shoot it out of his 45-70. as party to this wacked out plot, and the "expierienced" reloader for rifles out of our group, i'm trying to do the homework so this doesn't blow up in my buddy's face. another one of our buddy's reloads for shotguns, as i never made it to that part of my reloader's manual he has more know how than i do. anyways.... the issue that we are unable to solve is how to seal everything together. he was thinking about putting a gas check into the brass, and pressing it in, but i don't think that will hold due to lack of "neck" tension from the brass. to me it seems that we are going to have to crimp the brass over something to keep everything where it needs to be. the only other answer that we can come up with is to use wax to seal the end of the case, probably over some type of wadding or paper in order to keep from turning the pellets into a slug. has anyone ever tried or heard about doing this before?

Not nearly as difficult as you think. Take a sacrificial 45-70 case and sharpen the mouth of it with a deburring tool and use that to punch out wads of egg cartons (styrofoam ones work good). As to the powder charge, I'll let you work that out.

Prime the case, put some powder in (again, be careful here), place a wad, put the shot in, then place another wad. Use some silicon, wax, or crazy glue to glue the top wad in place. A slight roll crimp will help to hold everything in place but will make loading future shots difficult unless you resize the brass. Cardboard wads will work better but they're a bit harder to get cut out.

You can also add in some red chalk line chalk to the shot (makes a nice red cloud when you shoot), or glitter, or powdered creamer if you're using black powder. The creamer will ignite in front of you adding a nice boom to the shot.

Let us know how it goes.
