After being bruised and beaten by the 45-70 mid range loads, and 405 gr jacketed bullets, I started looking for some light loads. I found a load of 15 gr Blue Dot and 405 gr cast bullets is just the thing. 1080 fps, and much milder recoil. Probably would do in a deer, too. With a load of 10 gr BD, velocity is around 900 fps and loafs along. Another plus is not much report from a 26 " barrel.

Edit:
Using 15 gr AL8, velocity was about 950. I am using AL8 because I have so much of it.
Using 47.6 IMR 4064 I got about 1490 fps.

Re: 45-70

My everyday 45-70 load is 15gr Unique, under a 405gr cast bullet from Oregon Trail. 1250 fps, mild to shoot but still very powerful.

Here's some data I recorded,

Marlin 1895, 18.5" bbl.
Rem brass
CCI 200 primer
405gr Laser Cast
Unique
16gr - 1300 fps
15gr - 1250 fps
14gr - 1190 fps
13gr - 1120 fps
12gr - 1050 fps

I have been getting from a 45/70: 400 fps 155 gr 1 gr Bullseye with a 20" barrel.

This makes the sound of a BB gun.

This will stop a 14 pound or a 19 pound raccoon with a body shot, in 2 seconds.

This is WAY better than a Ruger 10/22 with expensive suppressor. It they are way up in the tree and moving, a single quiet body shot is easy to get. Then get the other ones.

The trick is the case filler gets the peak pressure up, the expansion ratio up, the efficiency up, but the escapement gas is kept below one atmosphere above ambient by the low powder mass and large barrel bore volume.

The 155 gr are from Liberty bullets, but that guy died.
The 150 gr from from Big Sky seem to work about the same
