+1 The fit and finish is outstanding. Lots of pride in ownership there.

How well does the brake work on the 460's? I am contemplating a 460 myself (just for fun...not hunting). Wondering if I should just get the 8.5" bar if the 5 incher has suicide recoil. From Youtube videos, the 5" doesn't look horrible. I shoot full-house .44 mag w/o a break all the time and it's fine. I'm pushing 240gr @ around 1300fps right now.

Not trying to discourage you, just saying.

i am looking at the 460 smith and wesson 10.5 inch barrel from the performance shop, its job is hunting from pigs and deer to elk and eland/buffalo after the gun comes the problem of what scope to put on top, also where is everyone getting ammo from?anyone have any hunting stories/pics?

Re: 454 casull or 460 smith and wesson?

Dont wast your time with the S&W. The Freedom Arms is twice the pistol. There made like a watch and are extermely accurate. The balance is the main thing the FA is lighter and balanced SO much better. I have had a PC 500 mag and two FA m-83's,I am using a 12in 454 with 300 gr XTP handloads. off a rest at 50yds its easily a 1-1 1/2" its about 6-8 in drop at 100. have killed several deer and all were DRT.

Re: 454 casull or 460 smith and wesson?

I have three Freedom Arms Model 83s. One in 454, 41 mag and 22 LR. They are a pure joy to shoot. The 41 and 22 are for Silhouette shooting. Lots and lots of 40x40s.

I was not thinking when I ordered my 22 as they come with a bead blasted finish and not the normal brushed finish.

When I ordered my 454 I also bought a 45 ACP cylinder. It is a real nice break from the pounding of 454 ammo. However you can shoot 45 Colt ammo through a 454 cylinder.

I have shot a Smith 460 and did not care for it. It felt heavier than it needed and the sticky grips meant I sucked up all that recoil. The Freedom Arms Bisley style grips allow the gun to rotate slightly and sparing your wrist.

Get the Freedom Arms, you wont regret it. If you do, they hold their value much better than the Smith.

I made some wadcutter loads out of 45 colt No BS...at 25 yds there was 1 hole about .53 best group I ever shot, +1 on the grip style....gun will rotate up the SW you feel recoil alot more

what about accurate ammo? </div></div>

I am using a Leupold 2.5-8 and a fixed 4.

What gun/caliber?

Re: 454 casull or 460 smith and wesson?

I like the .454...have one in Ruger Redhawk scoped as a deer gun. I also have a Freedom Arms .44mag.....no comparison between the 2 but also different animals. The Freedom Arms is a pass down forever pistol.....quality through and through.

Re: 454 casull or 460 smith and wesson?

S&W 460 all the way, I have used it with the .460, .454, and .45 LC and everything other than the .460 is soft shooting in comparison. It is also very accurate and can hit just about anything inside of 100 yards easy. I would think that the .460 would be the best choice just because it can shoot all three different rounds at any time.
