I have some 4831sc on hand. How well would this work for a .338 Lapua?

I know where I can get some Ramshot Magnum. Would this be a better powder?

You can see how they compare here

Re: 4831sc for .338 lapua

off the top of my head I would say if you are using 225gr or smaller bullets you could get away with it in a pinch--but it is not an ideal powder. For heavier 250's or 300's dont even bother. You will need a much slower powder such as RL25 or Retumbo

Re: 4831sc for .338 lapua

depends on barrel length in my opinion my gun ar 30 26in barrel likes it behind a 250 gr mk in a longer barrel i agree probably to fast for the bigger bullets

Re: 4831sc for .338 lapua

mexrunner brings up a good point - My 338LM has a 30" barrel so that's what I was using as my reference. What barrel length are you using?

Re: 4831sc for .338 lapua

25.5 inch long barrel.

What are your opinions on the Ramshot Magnum powder?

If you look at that burn chart it is right between H1000 and RL25.

Re: 4831sc for .338 lapua

Personally never used Ramshot Magnum but it looks like a good option. After running the numbers using 4832sc is not horrible. You will give up a bit of performance but if you are looking to burn up some powder it will work.

Re: 4831sc for .338 lapua

H4831 shot very good in my Lapua...in the end I chose VVN560 for the 250 Scenar and Retumbo for the 300 Scenar.

The N560 was a bit more consistant on E.S. than anything else with the 250. The downside is VV powder is spendy...but it costs a lot to shoot a Lapua no matter what you load.

Good Luck!!

I run H4831 in my TRG42 with 225's and 250's. Good to go.

Yep, same here. Out to 1k and loaded between 85.5-87grs under the two 250s, it's a moderate load that works well for my Sako. With a 1:12", I don't shoot the 300s, but VV-165, VV-170 and H-1000 have also worked well. I have some RL-25 to fiddle with down the road.

Load to the distance you intend to shoot. If you don't have to load hot to get there, don't. Your throat will thank you.

Thats great advice and often forgotten...even by me

Re: 4831sc for .338 lapua

I have a .308 I shoot to 1k. I want to shoot as far as I can with this. Will 4831 still work for this?

Re: 4831sc for .338 lapua

IMO 4831 is a bit slow for the .308.....may not be able to kill two birds with one stone. Most guys use Varget or 4895 for the .308.
