I just loaded 100 rds. of .308 Win with 42 grs. of H4895 in LC brass with Win. primers 165 Hornady BTSP projectiles.
This seems to work for me. I used a new bottle of powder and there is some left over.
I have several cans of 4895 with some left over both IMR and Hodgdon. I also have some 4895 purchased several years ago from GI Brass, about 4 lbs.
That was good powder and loaded well.
My question is, do you think it would be OK to use up these small quantities of IMR and H by pouring them all into the leftover of GI Brass 4895 in a jug and rolling it around to get a good mix and starting on the lower end with my loads or should I keep them seperate?
Thank you for you input. Regards, FM

Re: 4895 powder

I would not mix different Manufacturers. But, yes I pour the last
little bit IMR into the new can of IMR and mix very well. I hate
to rework loads. I try to always go 8 pounds at a time.

Re: 4895 powder

I wouldn't do it on general principles, if you are really looking for max accuracy. For plinking it might not be a big deal.

Because you can really never mix things uniformly (unless you are really tossing them around like an industrial mixer) IF the powder grains have a different shape, size, or weight to the kernels between brands, and I'm guessing that the H is slightly different the real IMR or real mil-surp IMR.

Fro example, take a can of mixed nuts, and gently virbate or shake it side to side for a few minutes. The larger pieces will "float" to the top and the smaller nuts will settle toward the bottom. Same thing will happen to your powder.

Shoot one up, then just adjust the load by the fraction of a grain needed to get the velocity that you want and have found is good for your barrel harmonics is what I would do.
