Looking for a critique of those with more knowledge than I. Maybe you see something that I don't. Should I stick with the load that produced this group; 168 SMK, 42gr Varget, BR2 primers, Lapua brass and an OAL of 2.828" (max depth is 2.838"). Or should I keep tweaking it? The smaller squares are 1/2".

I was shooting prone, off of a bipod and a rear bag.

I was shooting my Sav 10FP.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Greatly appreciated.

Re: 5@200. Requesting critique.

Are you really asking for advice or trying to show off?

Your posts in this thread sound alot like the old "I just picked up this Rem 700 Milspec 5r with a Nightforce scope, never been fired, for $700! How'd I do?"

Thank you. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

No, sir. I do not want to be labeled, "that guy". I want to make sure that I do my best to shoot my best. That's why I joined this forum. There is a wealth of knowledge on here and I the more more I learn now the better I will be on the range. If my post came across that way, I apologize.

Re: 5@200. Requesting critique.

Groups look great. Your rifle is obviously a Lazer but you missed the Bullseye by a good inch. Where I come from they don't care if you put 100 rounds in the same hole at 1000yds. If you don't put 'em in the 10-ring... You missed!

Good shootin' as far as repeatability. Now work on accuracy. There IS a difference!

Re: 5@200. Requesting critique.

What are your goals with this load? Is it to shoot groups at 200, or to shoot long distance?

I ask for two reasons-

1: the 168 SMK is less than ideal at distances longer than 600 yards. It certainly CAN do it, but it doesn't do as well in the wind, and it starts to run out of gas in a hurry.

2: Have you run this load over a chronograph? Because what looks good on a group at 200 yards might not fare well in a longer distance shoot, where ES and SD are king. Also- I would try this load at varying temps as well. It might shoot well at the current temp, but a 30 degree increase or decrease could entirely ruin this rounds accuracy.

Most of this advice is repeated from competitors who told me how to develop my load. The end result in my load development grouped like that at 100 yards, not 200, but has an ES of 20, single digit SD, is stable and shoots well from 0 degrees F to 90 degrees F (had ammo in a climate controlled environment,) and recently went 13 for 13 on a 1.5 moa target at 933 yards.

It all comes down to what you want to do with it.

As for the quality of your groups at 200- they are very good, but there is no doubt in my mind that you knew that before you posted them.

Re: 5@200. Requesting critique.

I agree with BM11. You didn't list velocity data. This likely won't go to 1,000 very well with 168gr SMK's. But that may not matter to you.

Go ahead and post a 5 X 5 to show how the load is, on average.

Well in that case, sorry for jumping to conclusions.
I have a near-identical rifle: Savage 10FP in B&C A2 stock with Leupold 4.5-14x40 scope. And I'd start break dancing if I could shoot 1/4 and 1/8 MOA groups at any yardage.

Re: 5@200. Requesting critique.

I guess it would depend on what you plan on doing?
Shooting palma / f-class? or killing mulies at 300 yards?

if you're taking animals stick with it. if you're shooting f-class you're probably still doing very well.

Re: 5@200. Requesting critique.

1/2Moa is getting you x's in f class, this appears to be halving that. 3 Shots inside your fingernail@ 200, I think you hit the nail on the head.

I'm no expert, but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night.

Re: 5@200. Requesting critique.

Take the more powder comments with a grain of salt. My 308 shows pretty fair pressure signs at 43.5 and I am getting similar groupds at 42.5g. Thats pushing a 175 at 2630 according to my chrono. The same load is light in my FIL's rifle and we were able to get up to 45.0 without pressure signs with his. Both rifles are Rem factory barrel rigs. I have a whole stable of rifles that I can get info like this from. I.E. I have 2-280 Ackley rifles. One with a Shilen and the other a Krieger 5R. Max load with same components differs by 3.2 grains between the 2 rifles. The groupings look good and being off the target 1-2" with load work shouldnt matter. Definately need to put it on a Chrono though. One of the best shooting investments I have purchased is my Chrono.
