5R load question

I talked with someone here a couple days ago about a .308 load. They were suggesting 43 gr Varget behind a 175 SMK. I sat down to try this out, but found the Sierra manual describes 41.7 gr Varget as a max load. Not wanting to cause an issue with the gun or my face, I figured I'd see if anyone else loads something similar with safe results. In my short 7 years of reloading, I've never ran a load hotter than the book suggests, so this caught my attention.

Thanks for the help.

Re: 5R load question

Sierra is very conservative.
Check out the Hodgden manual or look it up online, 45gr max and compressed.

Personally I run 43gr to 44gr with no issues.

As always, start low and work up.

Re: 5R load question

Sierra is the most conservative manual out there.

I find my Lee manual to be more in line with reality. You can also go to the powder manufacturers' sites where they also list their loads (often for free).
