I am thinking of building a white tail rifle next year. I am looking at a Rem Varmint contour at no more than 20" Just wondering what your guys thoughts are on an 18" or 20" in either 260 or 6.5cm?
My 22" 6.5x47 Lapua I had kept up just fine at 22". I lost less than 100 fps cutting it from 27" to 22" with 130 gr Bergers. My 140s actually sped up having cut it down. Strange, I know.
I wouldn't hesitate if you're using it for hunting ranges. If competing, longer may be better.

I've been pushing 140gr A-Max @ 2810fps; 2700fps should be very easily attainable with a 20" barrel.</div></div> My 19" Has no problem hitting 2700 and that is with very little development. It shoots fine at 2700 so its staying there.
Thanks for the responses guys. Yea I am going to be building a F/TR off of a Pierce action and just want a beater / hunting rig. Plans are Savage Stevens action, Shilen 1:8 cut to 18-20, HS stock, Vortex HS 4-16 maybe 2-10.
I've got a 22" rock creek with 43.2gr H4350 and 142smk's it's at 2800. Great barrel. It's also melonited so that might have something to do with the speed. 2,800fps seems to be the magic number with the heavier bullets
I'm a 6.5 fan all the way, but I'm about to do a 20" .243 for my supressor. I'm hoping to shoot the 105 hybrids and the A-max's at decent speed. I hope It works out.......if not its gonna be a costly error.
