Whats the shortest you would want to run a 6.5 creedmoor barrel? I have a 1.250 straight barrel that weighs a ton. I want to use this on an AICS stock. I will need to cut the barrel short so i dont have all that weight hanging out front. Can i go 20"? Lee

Re: ^.5 Creedmoor barrel lenght question

i went 24" - i need to push the bullets about 1gr harder than the factory loads are loaded to get 1000 yard performance. seems to be ok pressure-wise, but i don't get very many loadings in the brass before the primer pockets lose it.

Re: ^.5 Creedmoor barrel lenght question

I wouldn't go 20" in anything other than a .308. I wouldn't go under 24" but would be better at 26".

2 Many, what's your load and how many firings before they open on you? I have 4 loadings on brass that is pushing the 140s at 2870fps and the primer pockets are still nice and tight.

Re: ^.5 Creedmoor barrel lenght question

Will still give you less velocity than a longer barrel. That's not just with the Creedmoor either but the .260 or .243 etc. When you start using the slower powders like H4350 you will lose more than the faster .308 powders.

Go 24" and you can always cut it back but if you go 20" you can't add on barrel length if you find it lacking.

Re: ^.5 Creedmoor barrel lenght question

Do a search about 6.5 creedmoor. I asked a question about a 18.5-20" Creedmoor. I had several replies and one guy gave me a good bit of info. He had a 23" 6.5 Creedmoor and he was pushing 120's at about 2750-2800fps and the 140's at 2650 fps. I think a 18.5/20" barrel would be too short for this round thats why I decided against it. You could probably get away with it if you reload it a little hotter than factory in a 22" barrel (ASSUMING IT WILL STILL BE JUST AS ACCURATE AS A FACTORY LOAD). I decided to do an 18.5/20" .308 and mainly shoot 155 Palma's. Really good velocity and high BC.

Re: ^.5 Creedmoor barrel lenght question

I searched the holw web looking for this info and dint find much at all. I did read that one fella was getting close to 3000 with 120's in a 22" barrel. I just dont know if i beleive that!! I will look some more. Lee

Re: ^.5 Creedmoor barrel lenght question

I wouldn't go any shorter than 26". If it's still to heavy at that leangth then I would sell that barrel and order a medium palma contour or something similar.

I'm running a 28" MTU contour and it's still comfy to shoot in all but the offhand. I am just at the factory published velocity with that barrel length. Like Rob said...I wouldn't go short on any caliber smaller than .30 cal big cases and a tiny bore makes it hard burn all the powder inside. You can only fit so much powder in the case...

be safe, shoot well

Type in (6.5 Creedmor 18.5-20" barrel)I spelled Creedmoor wrong on the original post, only had one zero in the moor part. Yeah, I agree I just dont see 3,000fps from a 22" gun. He might be loading them hot to get that. The guy I talked to had a custom GA with a 23" barrel and got an average of 2,870fps average for 20 rounds over 2 hours of shooting. That was factory Hornady 120 grainers. Come to think It might be possible to load them hot and get close to 3,000 from the 120's. I would still prefer the 140's. They have a higher BC and they have always seem to be more accurate than the 120s from what I have seen. (We are talking about .10-.25 moa more accurate not a huge diffrence but everyone always wants to get the most out of their gun)

>2 Many, what's your load and how many firings before they open on you? I have 4 loadings on brass that is pushing the 140s at 2870fps and the primer pockets are still nice and tight.

140gr SMKs and 140gr AMAX, moly coated, 42.9gr H4350, remington 9-1/2 primer. i seat the bullets to factory length as it does not seem to make a difference what the jump is in this gun. i get about 2730fps. the primer pockets are noticeably looser after just 1 firing and after 4 firings, i can seat new primers in by pushing with my thumb. i have not seen any leaks around the primer, tho.

i experimented with 42.0 gr H4350 for short line work (factory load is 41.9gr) and the primer pockets still loosen up rapidly. i noticed this on two different lots of brass.

i FL size using the hornady sizer, pushing the shoulder back about .003" and trim after sizing to minimum.

Re: ^.5 Creedmoor barrel lenght question

That's odd. I use 43grns with standard naked 140 AMAX and get no pressure or loosening of primer pockets. You should have less pressure with the moly.

All I do is bump the shoulder back .001 in the FL die, trim/chamfer/deuburr and uniform primer pocket.

Re: ^.5 Creedmoor barrel lenght question

rob01 what dies do you use for your creedmoor? I purchased the basic set from hornady. Will these be ok? thanks sir!! I think i am going to try 24" on the barrel. Unless this is a case of bad accuracy with lower velocities, I figure even at 24" it will out do a 308 with ease??? Lee

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor barrel lenght question

I use the basic FL dies from Hornady that were about $35. Only thing I did was add the micrometer to the seater. Dies work great. No complaints.

rob - yeah, i figure there's something else going on. i am not off the map on the charge i worked up. it happens on two lots of brass.

not trying to hijack the thread so my feeling is that less than 24" is probably not a good idea on the 6.5CM.

BINGO!!! thats what I got and I LOVE 'em!

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor barrel lenght question

No complaints with my 23" 6.5 Creedmoor Bartlein barrel. I am running it with a can. If I wasn't using a can, I would have gone 24 - 26".
