6.5 creedmore barrle length

Re: 6.5 creedmore barrle length

Really i run a 20" 6.5x47
What exactly is the issue?

Instead posting what you think how about basing it something like data output from Quickload

Quickload will tell OP what he needs to know vs an opinion

So please explain your "I wouldnt go shorter than 24"
based on what data?

Re: 6.5 creedmore barrle length

The shortest I've ran has been 24". I'm currently running my barrel at 26". I've always used H4350 and suspect utilizing different powders you can find a load that will shoot fast from a shorter barrel.

Handloads

Re: 6.5 creedmore barrle length

With handloads you can bump the powder charge up and get better velocity with the shorter barrels but if you were looking at 24" anyways then I would keep it there so you don't need push it too much and get pressures too high.

Bullet weight also makes a difference as with the heavier 140 area bullets a little longer barrel is nice to have again so you don't have to get pressure too high. With your 24" choice you will be fine with any bullet factory or handloaded.

Re: 6.5 creedmore barrle length

I just ordered a 29" mtu Kreiger blank. I'm probably going to have it finished at 28". I hope to get the 140 VLD to 2850 without having to push it hard so the brass life will be good.

You won't have any trouble getting them going 2850 fps. I have found with a tight head space +0.002 my brass life has been excellent. I'm still using the original batch of brass I started using when I finished chambering the barrel. they are coming up on 10x reloads and holding up great.

Re: 6.5 creedmore barrle length

Just a data point to share:

24" 1:8.5 twist, ~75F 80% humidity and 327ft elev

139gr scenars are running ~2800ft/sec 42.4gr H4350, cci200
142 smk are running ~2750 ft/sec 42.6gr H4350, cci200

I LOVE it.

I have a 22" 260 and it's only producing 2650 with a 142SMK. It's a gasser though so if that's not apples to apples, I don't know what is

+1 on what Rob01 said about factory vs. handloads. He'd be the man to listen to!

Hope this helps!

I am running a 25 inch Bartlein barrel in 1 in 8 twist, and my chrono was showing 2850 with Hornady Factory 140s. The next barrel will be 24 inches.
