Thinking of turning my rock river 16" varmint into a 6.5 grendel for tactical shoots. Just wanted to change the barrel and bolt, how good is the stuff from alexander arms?

If anybody has any experience with this, or if there is a better way to go....

Thanks, Javy.

Re: 6.5 grendel build

The 6.5 Grendel is great. But it does take some work. If you don't reload, the AA stuff all works as advertised. I bought some Hornady and it works pretty good too.

Personally, I prefer the longer barrel so that I get the velocity I need for the longer shoots. If you go with a shorter barrel you will still have enough velocity to get you out to 1k but it's slower and more prone to wind movement.

Best load for it is still, IMO, the 30 gr. of AA2520 behind a 123 Lapua, SMK, or A-Max. Any of the three will get you to 1k.

Javy, did the same with my 16 inch upper, for the purpose of using the rifle in some tactical matches, but I went with 264lbc a little different than AA's 6.5 but not much. Steve Satern used to make 6.5 stuff, but I am not sure if he still is. If you are a reloader, there are some other alternatives out there, that have super ballistics. I am quite happy how my 18 upper turned out, but I am not positive that I have enough barrel length to take full advantage of the caliber out as far as 1000 yards. I you use AA stuff a barrel bolt and some mags are all you need, there's some decent factory ammo for it and it does help a little over the 223caliber shooting a 500+.

Re: 6.5 grendel build

I have two grendel uppers. The first I put togther myself. I bought a Saturn Bolt and Barrel from Midway and put it togther. The other upper I had GA Precision put it togther for me. Both of them have 20 inch barrels and they are both very accurate. I reload for my grendel and currently you can find brass. I also have shot Wolf and Hornday ammo. It is a good caliber and I like it for the AR platform.

Re: 6.5 grendel build

I have 2 Grendels. One I built using a Lothar Walther 18 inch barrel. The other one was a 19.5 inch Alexander Arms Shilen Barrel. Alexander Arms treated me really well, and the rifle was well worth the wait.

It was accurate enough that I won a local precision rifle (civilian sniper) match with it. The most distant targets at the match were 10 inch plates at 500 yards. Lots of very small targets in closer, and some really fast times, odd shaped targets, unusual shooting positions and so on. The rifle (Alexander arms)just flat works, and shoots great.

The Lothar Walther rifle is great too, but you are looking for info on Alexander arms. I have nothing but good to say about the company. They even had their armorer help me trouble shoot my Lothar walther rifle to get it running well. When a company is willing to help you get a competitors product running well, I think that is some pretty amazing customer service. I would buy from them again in a minute if I was buying a similar rifle.
