Gunsmithing 6.5 Grendel Extraction issues

I just got a brand new 6.5 grendel from a custom company. I bought 3 boxs of 6.5 grendel in 264 lbc brass from Precision Firearms. All the brass was hornaday but the bullets were nosler,vmax, and lapua.

First round into the chamber would not extract. Bolt wouldn't budge. Broke the rifle down, its AR style weapon. Had to pry the bolt back with a screw driver and the case came out leaving the bullet stuck in the barrel.

Finally managed to get the bullet out, it was a vmax. So I figured it might be the round stuck a mag with laqua bullets in it, it cycled 7 rounds fine and the 8th one stuck just like the first. Used the screw driver pried back the bolt,case came out bullet stuck in the barrel. I have not managed to dislodge it yet.

I spent a good sum of money on this fire arm and needless to say I am pissed. But before I go off cussing someone out I wondered if you gentleman had any ideas to what might be the exact issue. I would like to blame the round but my temper is clouding my judgment.

Is the chamber cut for a 264LBC or a 6.5 Grendel, the difference does count, pretty sure 6.5 Grendel ammo will work in the 264LBC, but not the other way round.

I think, from my research, that the ammo may be the issue. As states above, I think there is a difference, but am new to the gender as well. I just built an upper and it cycles hornady amax factory ammo just fine, well manually anyways. I haven't shot it yet, dam job gets in the way!

So, I just got my upper done. The first thing I noticed when I chambered a round and extracted it was that there was a slight firing pin strike on the primer. The round did not fire, but it alarmed me somewhat. Is anybody having any issues with this at all?

Thats normal, anytime you close the bolt on a loaded round you'll get a slight mark from the firing pin.

I think its your ammo as well, but clean out your chamber really well and try shooting it again before calling the MFG.

If you need any help with the upper/rifle, I can help as I build quite a few of these.

Cool thanks Scott. I guess if I have to contact the manufacturer, then I can call myself! I don't imagine that sabre will do anything about a used barrel I bought. I haven't even shot the thing yet, but plan to tomorrow.

Shot it today and had 2 stove pipes. Other then that it went great. Not sure what caused that, but it happened with my 6.5 mag and with a 223 mag that I was experimenting with. Just FYI, a 223 mag fed and functioned just fine with 6.5 ammo in it! The only issue that I could see was that I had to have the bolt locked back to use it. The 1st round out of a 223 mag would strip when I cycled the bolt over it.

I have 3 6.5 grendels; two in official AA uppers and one in a walther barrelled "6.5 SAOD" (grendel clone). Fired factory and reloaded ammo without problem.

Sounds like a short throat to me if factory bullets are sticking in the barrel.

I had some ejection problems with my Grendels (I have had 3, now down to 2). The ejection problems were traced back to a too strong extractor spring. The spring caused the extractor to press so hard on the case, that the fired case was binding on the opposite side of the bolt's inside radius. This caused the case to drag while the ejector was trying to push it off the inside of the bolt radius. Because the fired case couldn't get out of (or off of) the inside of the bolt fast enough while the rifle was going through it's extraction, ejection, stripping new round off the magazine cycle, the case would be stovepiped, or jammed into the inside of the receiver somewhere. I put in a weaker extractor spring, or in one rifle removed the little donut around the extractor spring, and ejection went back to normal.

You can easily test this with the bolt out of the rifle. Hook a case under the extractor, and if it pops off easily and immediately with authority, every time, you probably have some other problem. My cases would sometime hesitate before the ejector could pop the case out of the bolt.

I just got a SAOD 6.5 upper (by surprise). Walther barrel...free floating hand guard.
Can anyone tell me about it?

try Lapua cases--they are on the min. side of headspace
Hornady cases are at the nominal end---tight match chambers in true 6.5 Grendel will not work with Hornady cases--have to scrape the chamber to work properly with Hornady ammo
