Range Report 6.5 Grendel Velocity from 18" Gas Gun??

Hi All -

I have a Satern 18" 6.5 Grendel barrel I am looking to do an AR build with. Is anyone out there able to get 2700+ from a Grendel gas gun with this length of barrel pushing 129/130 grain bullets?

doubt it, don't stone me if my memory is off but i believe my hottest load for my 18" with 123's was in only in the 25's

Only way your going to get that kinda velocity is going to be with the lighter bullets like the 108gr. Scenar, 107gr. SMK and TAC is a combo thats fast.

If you had a longer barrel (26"-28") you might be able to get that high with some Hot loads.(maybe not)

Agreed with what Longrange30 said. Absolutely, no way in hell, you are getting 2700 from the 130gr class out of a 18" Grendel.

I have the exact same barrel as you and it shoots the 123grainers at 2500 in 75*; 2475 in 45*.

The 107/108grainers are excellent choice if MV is desired.

Thanks for sharing your experiences guys. JB - what ranges are you shooting your 123s out to? I am admittedly trying to take a shortcut (experience of others) to load development for this. I am thinking of setting it up as a precision carbine for use out to maybe 800 yards. This would be for cardboard/steel only.

I have shot the 123gr's out to 1000yds against paper targets, with good results.
I shot a precision tactical match a few weeks ago next to a guy competing with a AR-15 in Grendel - that match had shoots out to 1025yds, with many shoots >600yds and he was doing fine. I have competed with my Grendel out to 600yds.

I'm just blown away on how light the weapon is - it weighs in at <8 lbs w/o the scope - and how accurate it is a long ways out. Too bad Satern isn't making more of those Grendel barrels

If you are worried about velocity. Try the 120gr.-123gr. Bullets with A2520 powder. You might be able to get up to 2,600fps or a little over (maybe). Cant hurt to try. <span style="text-decoration: underline">Get a Chrony out and start loading some bullets up </span>with AA2520, Win748 and BL-C(2). I would try the 123gr.A-MAXs and the 120gr. SMK's if I were you and see what you come up with. You might be surprised.
