Is anyone familiar with this cartridge? I have a friend who is trying to choose between the 6.5-47 and 6.5-284. To me it looks like the PRC might be a better choice than both. He will be using this for a combination of paper and hunting.

284 needs a long action, and I'm not sure how reliably they feed from long mags (so I've read). 6.5x47 and 6.5 PRC can use a short action. The PRC shoots 140's at 3000-3100, the x47 is typically 2800 tops. The PRC barrels get HOT over long strings of fire (even with a heavy contour barrel), where the x47 handles it a lot better. x47 also has a good bit less recoil than a PRC or 284. The PRC has great factory ammo support, where the x47 and 65-284 doesn't. For hunting only, I'd pick a PRC. For shooting mostly long range, also PRC. If you want to shoot tiny groups and/or PRS matches, x47.

I’d look at mag systems, how much velocity I really need, and the cost of ammo/supplies. If you only need 2800 with a 140 to get the job done, shoot a x47 or a creedmoor. Better mags and just easier/cheaper all around.
But if you need more speed than that, look into a short mag.

The 6.5PRC and the 6.5”SAUM 4s” have both been great for us.

We’ve have a .150” x .2645” 1-30 freebore/lead
And .190” x .2645” 1-30 freebore/lead.

From what I’ve seen in BRUX and Bartlein bores, a .175” freebore is what I’m getting next. I’m sending our .150” carbide reamer out to be reground to .175”.

Seems most my 6.5 reamers are around .165” freebore length.

I’ll be trying 140s first in mine, and hope to get over 3100fps. To be honest I was hoping for close to 3150 with a 28” barrel.
