6.5 "Shorty" Rifle build

Looking to get a Trued remington action built to a length of 18" in 6.5 creed moor. I understand that I am sacrificing some velocity but the most I will be shooting is around 600 yards max. I will be running this system 100% of the time. To my understand, running heavier bullets will be more beneficial to me (140s) rather than the lighter loads.

I will mostly use this rifle for hunting/target shooting, with a max distance of 600 yards. Already have plenty of 308 guns so going with that caliber is not an issue.

Is anyone else running a system similar to this, if so what do you thinK?

A 18 inch barrel will get you a lot further than 600 yards. Nothing wrong with a trued Remington, Chad over at LRI https://www.longriflesinc.com/collections/products does a nice job with good prices and a quick turnaround. Even with good prices you will end up within spitting distance of the same rifle in a custom action.

Here’s my 6.5 18” built from a trued factory rem 700 with proof stainless barrel. I shoot the 130s to keep my velocity up in the 2720fps range. 140s will be slow in a short barrel. Banging steel at 600 is cake with this set up. Like Frank above, you can take it out much farther than you think.

For 600 yds check out the 130 grainers .... Your might like

My Fix has a 20" tube, and I'm still like 9 mils to 1000. Very doable set up. Sorry, that figure is for my 120 Copper hunting loads. The 130's do a bit better.

Great question Nitty. For what I think the objective of the PRC is, that is pushing the 143 or 147, you'd want a longer barrel. At least 20", but probably more in the 22-24" range.

I have some 140's on the way to try, and I bought one box of ELD-X or m (can't remember off hand) to also try, but as of now, I have not tried any above 130, sorry. That 130 berger seems like a pretty nice middle ground, but only testing will tell for sure.

20" 6.5CM here. I can push the 130s and 140s much faster then that of most people with the longer 24 and 26" barrels. Personally, I just don't see the need to ever go any longer.

2799fps 140gr ELD-M, 43.7 H4350 seated long. 130gr bullets shoot in the 2930fps range with 2000MR.

We’re definitely fans of short barrel 6.5mm’s. My new one is 18” (top) and my friend got his 16.5” (middle) up and running. I’ve just stuck with 140’s and H4350. My current load has room for improvement but as far as I’m concerned that will play!

I need to chronograph the load but based on DOPE looks to be flirting with 2,700 fps with suppressor attached.

We have a rifle currently coming together for a client that is similar to what you’re looking to build. Trued R700, Bartlein 5R (16.5”) in a Manners T4A Elite Tactical with TT trigger and APA brake. I’ll try and remember to post photos when it’s done. We’ve been doing a fair amount of stuff under 20” with Proof CF wrapped barrels too (photo below).

I have some experience with a shorter 6br. 20" barrel. It's rather slow compared to my f class 6brx. Shoots awesome though. . I think I was pushing 105's around 2700 in it.

RL26 may prove to be a worthy powder with the shorter barrels and the 140-147gr bullets. I think in the 18-20" lengths 2700+ fps with those weights shouldn't be an issue.

That's good to hear. I figured it would work. I loaded some up in my 22" and was steady cruisin at 2805fps.

I am using lapua brass so CCI 450 (small rifle magnums). Similar load gets the 143s just over 2900 fps in my 24” CTR.

I run 123gr out of my 18" 6.5CM at around 2820fps but my son rarely lets me shoot it any more.

I have an 18" 6.5x47L that I run 140grs from at 2700 fps.

I'd start around 43-44 grains and slowly work up of course.

I get 2686 FPS with my 21" barrel (suppressed) and factory Hornady 140 ELD-M's. Hornady 120's were 2910. Even with the loss in speed, the 140's do a little better because BC.

After running my 18" Barrett pictured above with 147s at just over 2700 fps, I can say my next Tikka CTR I buy for my wife to use will be a 20" even if my 24" CTR is slinging them at 2900+ fps.

Yep. In fact, my 20 CTR is getting a haircut next week.

Just glad I am not the only one not so patiently waiting for a TBAC ultra 7 (2 in fact) like have 3 or 4 months more though with my check getting cashed on 10/26/17.

Thank you That’s a recent DMR 16.5” 6.5 CM build we did using a Stiller TAC-30 and Manners stock. The custom Cerakote and external texturing came together really well.

My 18” gets along with 140 Berger Elite Hunters and is pushing them right at 2,700 fps with suppressor. I like running the 140’s because I use them in my 21” 6.5 SAUM too.

Thank you sir. You know i honestly don't know lol. I think i've been asked this before and never measured. Total barrel length is roughly 24.5" Jon's hellfire adapter with a flat end cap really brings the Omega down in length. It's right at 6.5". I'm heading home tomorrow i'll make sure to grab a tape measure and get an OAL.

It's a little on the heavy side at 12.5lbs, at least it feels heavier than that to me. I can't explain it but it's not a huge difference from the 15lb 20" 308 i used to hunt with. Could in part be due to the forward weight and the long SN-3. I'm planning on putting an AMG on it in a couple of months less that ZL5 from Minox hits with great reviews. Also have a PROOF blank i plan to get barreled for that TL3 in 7 SS for Elk hunting, can't wait to see how that turns out.

Next time I’m updating the site I’ll make sure to add them into the mix! That rifle has been very popular and a couple clients have wanted their own versions of it. We’re getting this one wrapped up.
