6.5 x 284 barrel burnout question

Re: 6.5 x 284 barrel burnout question

The barrell doesn't burn out. The throat erodes and it needs to be rechambered. The case and neck act as a funnel into the throat area and that why it erodes. The barrel can be used about for 2500-3000 rounds as long as you set it back every 900-1100 rounds.

Re: 6.5 x 284 barrel burnout question

The 6.5-284 has the powder capacity of a 30-06. So, when its necked down to a 6.5mm, thats a whole lotta powder for that bore size.

The straight .284 is a much better choice as the barrel life is longer. Alot of target shooters are moving away from the 6.5-284 to the .284 and are having good success and setting records.

I have a 6.5-285 that has 800 rds through it and the throat is toasted. Im going to try a .284 next and see hw it does.

BH, Thats correct. Think of a hose unrestricted in a large caliber round, neck it down what happens more force in a narrow area. Something has to give.
