I'm about to start building a 6.5 Creedmoor on a Defiance medium action with APA's RTG/SA bottom metal - Badger M5 footprint - for AI magazines and, possibly, AW magazines. I want to shoot 130gr & 140gr VLDs and Hybrids out of it. I know that this can present a problem because they prefer very little jump; and the resulting OAL may be too long for a magazine. Can I have a reamer made that will make it easier for me to load these bullets?

This is going to be my first custom so some of this stuff is on the outer edge of my understanding.

I have read some info from Berger claiming they'll shoot well as far back as .130 from the lands. However, all the rifles I load for currently are up close and I'd kinda like to stick with what I know, if at all possible. Just hate to build such a pricey rifle that I know, up front, that I'll have to go to a big jump with - not if there's a way to chamber spec it so that I can load them up close to the lands. Any help would be appreciated!

I have a bolt gun chambered in 6.5CM and using the Accurate Mag in AICS style with no backer plate lets me load comfortably out to 2.98 which works just fine with the Berger VLD's

I shoot an Rbros 6.5 Creedmoor, Defiance Action, Broughton barrel, etc. and using AW magazines. The chamber was cut with 130gr VLD's in mind. My load using the 130's and H4350 at 43.6 to 43.8 depending on the powder lot that I have and yields around 2925 to 2950 fps. The 130's are touching the lands. It shoots remarkably well, like under 1/2" groups. These cartridges fit in the magazine with no problem. Give Travis a call at Rbros Rifles, nice guy and i'm sure he will help you out with either answers to your questions or doing some work for you. Here is a pic of first suppressed group fired. Thanks! Do you know the specs on your reamer? I reached out to Dave Kiff about a reamer but haven't heard back yet.

Great news, though.

Sendit6.5, sorry but I don't but give Travis a call and I'm sure he will help you out. If you want I can give you some measurements based on my chamber length and CBTO distance, they should get you to within a few thousands but keep in mind CBTO will be based off using either my Sinclair or Hornady comparator inserts, there is a big difference in the readings. Hornady doesn't actually measure to the ogive but Sinclair gets about as close as I can get. Don't ask how I found this out.

No big deal. Thanks, though. I'm already loading for a Creedmoor and I can take some measurements off the loads I have already. It's a Savage 10/110 that I have shooting consistently in the low .3s (140gr @ 2823fps) with Nosler BTs. I use a CBTO of 2.246 using the same comparator. OAL with those loads is around 2.80. That started me worrying about VLDs in this new rifle I'm building because I believe the longest you can go in an AI mag is like 2.88 or 2.90. I'm waiting on a VLD seating stem for those dies right now so I can play around with the Bergers. The BTs are just fine, IMO, for shooting out 500-600yds but I don't have faith pushing them much further for hunting. I prefer the VLDs and trust the terminal performance at LR. They shoot great in my Tikka CTR .260 but I felt very lucky to get a load that shoots in the .4s and feeds through those mags. I'm almost too long to feed properly with those VLDs and I had to drop to the 130s to get that. If I single feed long bullets it'll shoot in the 2s on better days. I'm interested in getting into a little competition shooting but I make my living from hunting and so far only compete with myself, a couple buddies and a lot of fur. Lol.

My goal with this new rifle is to get it shooting consistently in the 2s and under 8.5 pounds before optics. It's being built by a renowned benchrest builder and shooter that just came back out of retirement. It better shoot better than my Savage factory rifle, for 5X the price! Lol! I feel a little uncomfortable about calling a smith to talk about a rifle being built by someone else. My smith feels confident and I have total faith in him; but I still have 4 months to wait on my stock, so I have time to obsess over details. Lmao!

Good luck and it sounds like your smith will know what to do based on your selected bullet. So you make your living hunting, interesting. As a guide? If so let me know what part of the country and for what, i might can give you some business.

I know it's not the same cartridge, but same action and magazines, I am loading 260 at 2.900 with ELD-X. I am .020 off the lands, and I can actually reach the lands and still use the magazine, well, till they erode. I would figure with a Creedmoor being a shorter case it would be better.
