Hey guys. I got a HellsCanyon 6.5 I reload for. Only been using 143 and 147 grain , with very good results. My rifle has a factory 1:7 twist. I'm wondering if I could get good 100yd groups with lighter 120ish bullets? Like to try. Any load data ya wanna share be welcome also. Lol...

Frank podcast from May about lighter bullets, shorter barrels and faster twist. number 270ish.

If you are doing the heavies then lighter bullets are generally fine in fast twists it may be possible to "overspin" a bullet (my memory gets old if its real or not, please double check) but I doubt you are in that range. (People shoot 55gr meant for 1:12 out of 1:7 all the time for ARs....). Generally heavier bullets require more twist to stabilize, so stepping down a notch or two to 120ish should have 0 impact with regards to twist.

Try it

That’s the only honest way to know

Just don’t have a suppressor on the end when you do it in case it doesn’t stabilize. The speed you attempt to run them could affect how they stabilize

I don't like to believe in "over spin" but I'm no expert. I suppose the only time a more aggressive twist will hurt you is the bullet itself cannot handle the RPM and starts blowing jackets off...

You'll have to try a few to find out...

I'd try a 140 before I'd settle on 120's. I have some 123 Scenars that I have been playing with pushing 2850-2900 from my 22" 1-8. I have single digit SD and spreads, but I need to work on the load. Just under 1" right now and that's yuge for this rifle.

It advertises and has 1:7 right on the barrel. I don't wanna fuck around with going to a 140 when I've already played with 143s, 147s. I'm just curious and like to experiment, that's all. But if anyone has experience and a waste of money, then I'd like to hear about it. The rifle is a Browning HellsCanyon model. Shoots nice, good looking rifle. I'm currently looking for a Savage in 6.5, no luck finding yet. Unless ya spot one at a gouger. It's hard to pay $700 for a $375 rifle like the 10sba etc..

Shoot the 120’s you won’t have problems stabilizing the shorter bullets in a 7” twist.
I worked up a load for my 6.5 CM Tikka CTR with the Hornady 95g V-Max pushing 3360 FPS with AR-Comp and they shoot great

it's hard to spend any money on a savage lol

its a 7 twist you'll be fine with lighter bullets or even heavier like the 153.5s
Personally, I've had awesome accuracy from my Savages. I only earn $96-100k annually, and hate to spend thousands. Broke down and bought a Savage tactical 6.5 I found today. Lol. At first shots, seems at LEAST as good as my Browning.
Bought a box of factory 129g that shot great!
